The castle was in chaos. Daydream pals kept a lookout everywhere you turned.
Joel had been summed to the king’s throne room by two frantic guards, and they had led him all but running down the halls and corridors and through the large double doors. They were silent and grim faced the entire way, shaking their heads when Joel asked questions, telling him shortly that the king had the answers.
The former farmer saw the palace overflowing with armed men now, calling out orders and with swords and bows and staffs drawn and ready. He heard the order called for the gates to be closed to anyone but the king, his family, and the royal Sprite twins. They were under lockdown.
Joel left the two guards and the daydream pals at the door of the throne room and strode in himself, keeping silent out of respect for the king and bowing. Ominously, Princess Arman and Princess Aislin were there, the former with his arms crossed in a most un-Sprite like manner and the Princess biting her lip. The king waved Joel up and was speaking before he could ask any of the questions burning his tongue.
“Minutes ago, Imps infiltrated the castle and kidnapped Alana,” the king said baldly, his words rushed so he talked over Joel’s loud curse, “They left no note, no clues…nothing. I can only assume they are keeping her as blackmail to me, to have control over this kingdom and break my alliance with the Sprites. I am gathering forces here, but I cannot leave, lest the situation worsen.” Pandoria only knew what would happen if the king were to ride off into battle, too far away to lead his people properly. “And so, I am sending you, Joel. Thus far you have proven yourself capable, and so, you are charged with bringing my daughter back safely. Succeed, and I will bless your union.”
Joel caught the unspoken alternative, that the terrible wrath of a doting father awaited him should he fail. He nodded and bowed again, feeling his heart race with a mixture of fear and excitement that precedes a great battle.
“I will get her back,” Joel said firmly, and the king saw fire flash behind his eyes, and almost knew a moment of pity for those who would be in Joel’s way. Almost.
