Jahzara wastes no time this evening... picking right back up in the story when Jack pitches his idea to the settlers.



She began...
"I have called you all here today," Jack began, "to propose a solution to the little... infestation problem we've been having." He stood upon a makeshift wooden platform before the entire settlement, chest puffed out proudly, his left foot resting on a rather large orange pommekin and a small object, covered by a brown cloth, held tightly against his body. "Pommekins."

"Pommekins?" a rather unpleasant Zisscor hissed in disgust. "What are we going to do, feed them pommekin pies until they are too sick to torment us any longer?"

"Not quite." Jack removed the cloth from the object in his arms, revealing a rather peculiar sight: a small pommekin the gunky contents within the shell removed, a wicked smile carved upon its front, as well as a pair of glowering eyes and a triangle nose, and, if one looked hard enough, the waxy remains of a candle inside. "This here," he continued, "is the solution to all of our problems."

The audience erupted all at once with boos and jeers, using rather colorful vocabulary to describe just how convoluted they believed Jack's plan to be before turning to leave.

"Wait, please!" the Jinx pleaded, hopping off of the stage. "I know for a fact this works; I have experienced it myself! Why, just yesterday, I warded off a rather nasty Phantom with a pommekin, and last night, this beauty," he motioned towards the carved pommekin, "kept my cabin safe and Pomme-free! The Phantoms are, for some reason, afraid of pommekins; if we combine that with scary faces and light, two methods that have had some affect against those beasts in the past, we can rid our humble settlement of them once and for all! Just try it, please. What do you have to lose?"

The settlers paused, reconsidering Jack's proposal. If he was lying they would simply endure the same thing they had for so many years now; but if he was right, if by some miracle his plan worked, they would have peace for the first time since they set foot in Darkwood. He was right: what did they have to lose? "Okay, fine, we'll do it," one of the settlers, a Riverside Cheran, replied. "Dear Pandoria, I hope you're right, Jack."


That night, the small Darkwood settlement was illuminated by the light of hundreds of flickering candles, each housed within its own carved pommekin. These 'Jack-o-Lanterns,' as they had been named in honor of their creator, were placed outside of homes, all throughout the streets, and around the border of the settlement. The settlers themselves were huddled in their cabins as per usual, awaiting the usual barrage of Pommes; but it never came. For the first time, the night was silent, and the settlers were able to sleep soundly and safely.

That morning the entire settlement was praising Jack's name. "We've won!" they cheered, dancing and jumping and whooping and singing. "By Pandoria we've done it! We've won! Praise Jack and his lanterns! Callooh! Callay! O frabjous day, we've won!"

Jahzara clears her throat and continues, though many are still lost in the story of those long ago settlers. Though they are far removed from those perilous times, these traditions stand, even today.

She continues, "And now we bring congratulations to this years Pommekin Carving winners! Many thanks and congratulations go to...

We would also like to wish a special birthday to one of our staff artists: Richy! Head on down to Mistic Chat to sign his birthday card. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for this special new pal, too.

Diving right into the story as the winds howled through Darkwood Forest, Jahzara wasted no time with introductions tonight. The moon hung heavy and illuminated all, though the fire burned low.



"At first Jack and Jill simply stared at the Mericai, still biting into their Pommes, unable to grasp just why the Misticpet was acting so crazily. And then it hit them like a ten ton train. “Jill, get in the house right now!” Jack shouted, dropping his breakfast and scrambling to his feet. He grabbed her hand, yanked her to her feet and began dragging her towards the safety of their cabin, but it was too late.

‘Thunk.’

The Phantom Tarinooki who had thrown the Clockwork Pomme trembled with laughter as it smashed right into the back of Jill’s head. Tears burst from the young Jinx’s eyes, dropping to her knees and cradling the back of her head. “Owwww, that-that hu-hu-hurt!” she sobbed, a lump already beginning to form where the Pomme had hit.
Jack’s body began to shake: not with fear, but with pure, unadulterated rage. His brow furrowed and his blood boiled; this was his limit. The moment that Pomme left the paw of the Tarinooki and came flying towards an innocent little girl, that villanous Phantom was done for. “Hey, you!” he roared, grabbing the closest projectile he could get his hands on. “Keep your filthy Pommes off of my sister, you brute!” With all of his might Jack flung a fair sized pommekin at his sister’s assailant.

To his surprise, the Phantom immediately stopped laughing and quickly dodged the incoming vegetable, a look of utter terror on its face. For a moment it remained frozen, staring wide-eyed at Jack, before turning to take one look at the pommekin guts splattered all over the ground behind it. Then, before Jack was able to register what had just conspired, the Phantom Tarinooki fled back into the darkness of the forest.

Jack snorted angrily before quickly diverting his attention back to his sister. "Are you alright?" he asked, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her into a hug.

"Mmhmm," she sniffled in reply. "The look on that Phantom's face when you threw that pommekin at him made me feel better." A small smile cracked across Jill's face, accompanied by a soft giggle.

Jack chuckled. "Yes, that face was pretty great, wasn't it? That'll teach 'em not to mess with my adorable little sister!" He laughed louder now, pinching Jill's cheeks and scooping her up into his arms. "Now, let's get you inside before I need to throw any more vegetables."

"Mmmn," Jill smiled, burying her face in her brother's soft feathers. "I wonder why the Phantom ran, though -- we've been throwing things at them for years, trying to scare them off, but it never worked before. Maybe they don't like pommekins-- which is weird, because pommekin pie is so good!"

At that moment a lightbulb lit up in Jack's head; his jaw dropped and he very nearly dropped the young Jinx he was holding. "Pommekins. That's it," he mumbled. "That's how we win. That's how we win! Jill, you're a genius!"



Jahzara stayed silent for some time, and those gathered about the dying fire contemplated where the story had ended this evening. How would the settlers win this war?

Jahazara peered into her crystal ball before gazing in turn at the assembled mass of Misticans. The story continues....

"However, for one Jinx, anger was beginning to replace the nearly palpable fear that hung in the air like a thick fog. As he held his younger sister’s shaking body in his arms, he asked himself, over and over, why this was happening; what had they done to deserve such cruel treatment? Had they not been respectful towards the forest? Had they not taken only what they needed and left a majority of Darkwood and its inhabitants untouched? These unprovoked attacks were hurting everybody on the settlement and, if someone didn’t do something, they would all starve this winter.

His anger grew with each Pomme that splattered against the wooden walls of his humble cabin; his fists clenched, his teeth grit together, and a scream began forming in his chest. But what could he do? He held his sister closer as the jeers boomed louder and the thuds of Pommes intensified. “Cursed monsters,” he snarled, “I will rid this peaceful town of you, I swear it.”

The chirping of Biruda gently shook the Jinx from his slumber. He slowly opened his eyes, yawning widely and nudging his sister awake. “Come on, Jill, time to wake up, love,” he cooed.

“Hnggg, Jack, is it morning already?” she moaned, squirming in her older brother’s lap and rubbing her eyes.
“Yes,” Jack chuckled softly, grabbing her gently under her arms and lifting her up as he stood, “and I think it’s time we went outside and got ourselves some breakfast.”

“Kay.” Jill wobbled forward in the general direction of the door, still extremely groggy, the only thing keeping her from collapsing to the floor and falling right back asleep being her brother’s support.

Both siblings felt much more awake after they had plopped down on the ground, two Pommes in hand and one in mouth. They were enjoying their breakfast until a scream tore through the air, followed shortly by a Mericai fleeing from a barrage of Pommes. “They’ve conquered the light, they’ve conquered the light!” he screamed frantically. “Nobody is safe anymore – run for your lives!”

At this, Jahzara heaves a sigh, looking to the sky she closes her eyes in contentment at the bright sunshine that took the chill of the autumn air.

"We will continue soon, I need a rest... Go on, isn't there work to be done? We can't sit around enjoying stories all day now, can we? The harvest is almost ready!"

What’s this? You’ve been giving out candy from last year’s festivities to this year’s trick-or-treaters? Goodness, quit giving out stale treats and look out for this year’s newest concoction!

A few updates to the Lanturnacht Festivities!

If you have been slacking on your Pomme Tree visits, you may wish to rethink that for the next few weeks!


You could catch one of these nifty Pommekins!

While trick or treating, you may come across a few new treats as well!



And while turning in those sweets, you may find yourself going a bit crazy over Jasper's latest offerings!

"Perhaps you can better tolerate the continuing of this story while the sun still reigns in the sky?" Jahzara peers around at the expectant faces, still yearning to hear more of how the celebration of Lanturnacht came to be.

When all eyes were upon her, she began her tale once more....



“We c-can’t keep going on like this,” a young Lirionox hissed through chattering teeth, tightening her hold around her husband’s arm and resting her head at the crook of his neck.

“Indeed,” agreed the Ahbruis, reaching his free paw around to pat his wife’s head, “this torture has been going on for five years now. It’s the Harvest Season, for Pandoria’s sake; we should be out gathering Pommes, not fleeing to our pathetic excuse for a fire the second the Sun begins to dip behind the horizon.”

“Every year it gets worse and worse!” growled an old Belragoth, rapping his wooden cane against the cold, hard soil. “We barely managed to scrape by last year, and I don’t think we’ll have enough Pommes to make it through this winter!”

The Ahbruis opened up his mouth to speak once more, but was abruptly cut off as an Arctic Pomme slammed into the back of his head with a loud ‘thwack!’ Out of nowhere, more Pommes of all different shapes and sizes began raining down upon the terrified settlers, their shrieks and screams drowned out by howls of laughter booming from the shadows of the forest.

“Run, you pathetic little creatures, run!” jeered a high-pitched voice, as a Mandoran Pomme flying from the darkness knocked the old Belragoth out cold. A moment later, the head of a Phantom Anya appeared amongst the trees, its tongue stuck out and dismembered paws forming an ‘L’ on its forehead.

Doors slammed and locks clicked shut all throughout Darkwood Hollow, the settlers having lost faith in the idea of ‘safety in numbers’ and abandoned
the light that had once been their only ray of hope in the terrifyingly black forest. Amidst the barrage of Pommes that now cascaded their homes they clung to each other,
the warmth of each other’s bodies the only small comfort they had.




Jahzara stopped her tale, watching the reactions of those gathered near, "We will continue again soon... Think on the plight of those long ago settlers. How will they combat those dark spirits that torment them so unmercifully?"

Every 60 mins, you may trick or treat on a profile. However, there may be times of high traffic that the staff will announce a Trick or Treat Bonanza and it will be shortened to every 30 mins!

However if you are a Champion of MIstica, you get to trick or treat ever 30 mins regardless! You also have a few special doorknockers to choose from:

There are over 55 candies currently in the Treat pool. Can you catch them all? It may be a good idea, considering that they are ALL considered Exotic foods now!

Come, come! Gather ‘round the fire now, huddle up close. Take the hand of the person next to you and hold on tightly as you watch the fire dance, its light playing across your cheeks and its smoke waltzing up into the midnight sky. Stare deeply into the inferno, my friends, as it has a story to tell: a story of good and evil, of festivals and disaster, of allies and enemies:

the story of Lanturnacht.

Long, long ago, nestled deep within the bosom of Darkwood, a group of settlers converged around a fire, just like we are now. However, unlike you and me, they faced a terror far worse than anything produced by cheesy horror movies and rubber masks. As the sun retreated behind the trees, its fading rays were choked out by shadows; the suffocating darkness compelled the settlers to squeeze as closely to the fire as they could get without setting their ragged clothing ablaze.

It was not necessarily the piercing blackness that frightened them, but rather what lurked within it; their tormentors were the lords of the night, so the group was only able to find safety in the light. However, the increasingly loud howls and moans reverberating from the forest were enough to make them worry that their meager fire may not be enough to keep their curse at bay.



"Am I frightening you, dear? Well, perhaps we'll just have to save some more for tomorrow," she cackles and turns to study her crystal ball.

I guess that's all she's going to tell us tonight.

You'll see a few things a little different. First off is the differentiation between Members and Staff.

Member scores will show the top 15 scores; while only the top staff is presented on the staff page.

More work is incoming, and Paul has been working extremely hard behind the scenes on a variety of issues to help make the site run smoother and create easier avenues to alter and change things. :)

That's right Mistica, starting out the new month with some fresh new contests!


First off, Champion users are now able to submit their flash games scores 2 extra times a day!


Secondly, the Flash game high scores have had a bit of a revamp! Now, it will actually record the top SCORES each month, and keep track of our all time high scores.


And head on over to check out the Distorted Pix that was updated today! Look for various updates to these weekly contests spread throughout the weeks ahead. :)

Finally, please take a moment to check out our monthly Art, Writing and Poetry Contests! They have been updated and the theme centers around the Harvest and being thankful for Mistica's gifts!

New monthly contests will be up first thing in the morning, keep your eye out. And if you have any last minute entries... make sure to get them in before midnight tonight!

Due to some real life, personal reasons, I have made the difficult decision to sell my half of the site to Zarabeythe. I wish there was a way for me to stay involved but I cannot. I will miss working with staff and members in the admin capacity, but I will still be around to chat with you all onsite as a member. Zarabeythe has the heart and soul of this site within her and I know you will all join me in supporting her as the sole owner of this most awesome place we call home. Hugs to you all.
