Queen Boreal’s palace, like the woman herself, was all efficiency. High, sheer walls, pale like ice, made climbing impossible, the sides slick so ladders would fall. Tiny arrow slits dotted the walls and towers like black eyes; there were few windows wide enough to even let any light in. And of course, it was surrounded by wintercursed guards and a black gate “decorated” with barbed wire and wicked looking blades.
An Eledon positioned at the gate’s entrance eyed Aurelius, King Blithe and Jasper warily. They weren’t exactly an army, but he knew the star was his queen’s enemy. Undeterred, Aurelius strode right up to the guard.
“Your queen has MeriKlaus. We’ve come to take her back,” he said.
The Eledon grinned and laughed, a sound like ice and gravel scraping together. “MeriKlaus will leave when Her Majesty has used her up. Leave, or I’ll put the whole castle on alert!”
Aurelius sighed. “I wish to do this peacefully. Boreal can no longer use Jasper, and she will not get the chance to use MeriKlaus, either. It’s best to let her go, now.”
---
MeriKlaus had been allowed to keep her warm coat and skirt, but even with all the thick layers she still shivered. Boreal’s dungeons were cold as the queen; ice gleamed on the rough stone walls and floor.
The cold didn’t bother the dark guards outside her cell, however. Two wintercursed stignightus stood post right on the other side of the bars, and they began a rather interesting conversation.
“That arrogant star has shown up demanding MeriKlaus!” One said with a laugh.
“Who’s with him?” Asked the other curiously.
MeriKlaus thought she stopped breathing, though she dared not move in case the stignightus realized she was listening.
“That’s the thing, just the fat old king and that crazy jinx Jasper!”
Both of the guards dissolved into harsh laughter, saying how they felt sorry for the trio; Queen Boreal wouldn’t show any of them mercy once they were caught! And that would happen quickly.
MeriKlaus feared the stignightus had a point. She had to help her rescuers, somehow...
Loud growling suddenly shook the stones beneath her. MeriKlaus winced; King Kohal, caged, was temperamental as ever. Maybe he could even sense Aurelius so close by and the star agitated him.
And suddenly, MeriKlaus knew what to do.
The mericai stood, bracing herself against the thunderous roars and snarls of her neighbor. She looked around her cell and found a metal bucket that was used to haul her water in daily; the bottom three inches was frozen solid. Good, she thought.
MeriKlaus grabbed the bucket and began smashing it against the wall closest to the kohal. His growls grew louder and the guards banged on her cell’s bars, yelling.
“Stop that, you idiot!”
“Keep quiet if you want us to stay out here!”
But MeriKlaus ignored them. Still shouting, they groped at their belts for the keys to her cell, but before they got to the lock a resounding crack echoed off the icy walls. MeriKlaus gave a cheer and kept up her ruckus; King Kohal screamed his rage and she fell back as the wall shuddered and gave way. The clank of manacles joined the commotion and MeriKlaus saw the guards take off as King Kohal rampaged right by her cell door. MeriKlaus muttered a prayer to Pandoria and one of the manacles miraculously caught one of the bars; King Kohal roared again and with a great groan and creak, ripped half the door right out of the wall and ceiling!
King Kohal kicked the bars loose and rampaged down the dungeon and up the stairs leading into the castle. Elated, MeriKlaus followed, though giving the kohal his distance.
---
Flanked by a gourix and an obsideon, Queen Boreal glided through the black gates, her face impassive even as it settled on Aurelius.
“I hear you’re making demands,” she said, and Aurelius nodded.
“MeriKlaus. We just want her back,” he explained, still quite calm, though he felt his patience wearing thin.
Before the queen could retort, nearly everyone was thrown to the ground as a great quake shook the earth. Queen Boreal snapped orders to her guards, but moments later two stignightus came dashing out of the castle and through the gates, barely pausing to bow.
“Your Majesty, King Kohal is loose!”
“How?” The queen demanded, turning flashing eyes on her guards.
“MeriKlaus, she did it!”
Boreal turned to Aurelius, seemingly considering which threat was greater. Then she whipped around, shouting at her guards as they all ran back to the castle. Blinking and slightly bewildered, Aurelius, King Blithe and Jasper followed.
Inside was bedlam. Yells and roars bounced off the walls and palace servants and guards were either running towards King Kohal’s rampage or trying to find a closet to hide in. Aurelius led King Blithe and Jasper down into the dungeons, but at the top of the stairs, came face to face with King Kohal.
The beast filled the space from floor to ceiling. MeriKlaus cowered behind him, desperate not be noticed, though it seemed his attention was all on the unlucky trio before him now.
Jasper stepped forward, grinning. He didn’t seem at all fearful of the kohal, and even Gregory laughed as he hopped off his head. He’d dealt with more fearsome beasts than this before!
“Now give us a show!” The jinx cried, dancing out of the way as King Kohal growled and swiped at him with one massive paw. His black wings flapped and the kohal bellowed, charging after him, but Jasper sidestepped him swiftly.
Aurelius saw an opening. He ran past the kohal and down the stairs to MeriKlaus, who’d already started up, and the two ran up and out into the hall. Laughing, Jasper whipped around and followed with King Blithe on his heels.
A moment later, Queen Boreal rushed past them. She glared at them but couldn’t stop; a whole troop was behind her, armed with whips and chains and spears. Aurelius led as they burst their way through the entrance and past the now unguarded gates to freedom!
MeriKlaus is saved! Huzzah!
