Mistic Pets

Jasper, Archie and Skreetch came rushing out of the Chamber, nearly tumbling over one another in their haste. The dim, humid Banshee Swamp seemed as bright as Bamboo Beach after the darkness they’d just come from.  

“Albrecht!” Jasper called, a rather nasty grin displaying his fangs, “We need to have a chat, I think!”

No reply. Gregory hissed and Jasper felt the hat twitching impatiently. He’d wanted to get his teeth on Albrecht for years, and this was the perfect excuse. But the koko had disappeared, it seemed, into the swamp’s thick grey mist.

“Coward,” Archie muttered, rubbing his wrists where the shackles had chafed his skin and fur.

Jasper was very still. Archie watched his brother warily, knowing the jinx was most dangerous when he seemed so calm.

“That worthless cheat is going to pay!” Jasper’s voice was a low, animalistic snarl, and Archie could almost pity Albrecht come next Lanturnacht.

These mummy bandages are available in the credit shop as well for a limited time. They were mistaken for dusty rags when stocking the shop this month but were luckiily found in time for some celebrating!

Stepping into the Chamber of Evil felt like stepping into a grave. 

Jasper and Skreetch blinked in the darkness but didn’t so much as miss a step. Neither were afraid; Jasper doubted any of Albrecht’s pets would have the guts to face him. He knew how to tame beasts; indeed, the jinx had his old whip in hand. 
 

“This place is full of phantoms,” the jinx muttered. As he spoke his breath rose in a cloud before him, and he was glad for his jacket. 

Skreetch nodded, though he didn’t feel the supernatural presences as strongly as the ringmaster did.

The shadow of the Chamber frightened many, but not Jasper. He looked up at the dark fortress like a general calculating his enemy, a look that intensified as Albrecht strolled up. Gregory’s loud snarl made the koko twist his mouth in disgust. 

“No need to be nasty,” said Albrecht without a hint of fear.

“I wouldn’t talk to Gregory like that, Albrecht. He’s angry and quite hungry,” Jasper snapped.

“Hm. Threats won’t find your brother,” the koko replied with a dark grin, “And you certainly won’t find him in there.” One of his large ears gestured towards the Chamber. “All you’ve done is bring me more customers, Jasper, and for that I should thank you!” Albrecht laughed, and Jasper repressed the desire to slash his smile right off.

“JASPER!” The frantic shout cut off Albrecht mid-cackle and the jinx ran up to meet Skreetch at the Chamber door. He was holding something white above his head and shoved it right in Jasper’s face.

 
Jasper snatched the item from Skreetch and instantly recognized it as a pair of white gloves, despite a fine layer of dirt. He turned them inside-out and saw what he expected: Archibald Bozoni III, in thread-of-gold lettering.

The jinx whipped around to face Albrecht, whose face was about as emotional as a stone. “These are Archie’s!” Jasper yelled.

“Archie’sss!” Gregory echoed.

Jasper huffed. His arms were crossed like a shield across his chest and Gregory growled, feeling his host’s stress rise.

“Gregory thinks this is a bad idea,” said the hat.

“I’m tired of Archie moping about, expecting this curse to rain down chaos and raze my circus to the ground. He’s demoralizing everyone else. I need him to get his head back on straight,” Jasper retorted. He didn’t want to talk of course; there were better uses of his time, but a divided, fearful circus would fail.

The aetra’s tent was dark. Jasper frowned and wondered if his brother was asleep, except the sun was still out and the circus was far too noisy to allow it.

“Archie!” Jasper called. He waited, tapping his foot, but the tent was silent.

“Archie!” The Jinx said again, more loudly this time. When the aetra still didn’t answer Jasper growled and whipped aside the tent flap, his mouth open and ready to deliver a lashing, but Archie wasn’t there.

Jasper suddenly felt cold. He dug around the tent and found that Archie’s shoes were gone. Had his brother decided to go for a very, very long walk?
“What am I doing this for?” Jasper laughed at himself, and exited the tent to go find Belladonna.

It was rare for Jasper to seek seclusion, but here he was sulking in his tent while customers ran by outside. For once, attention was the last thing he wanted.
 
So many things had gone wrong in such a short span of time. And what about the year before? None of his Mistmas plans had worked, and he’d fallen so sick he’d missed Lanturnacht. Jasper’s Circus was a huge success, and at first Jasper had taken that as a sign that the jinx curse didn’t exist. Now he wondered if that was part of it. Wouldn’t it be more painful to take a thriving circus rather than a dying, destitute one?

“Curses don’t scare Gregory,” the jinx’s hat declared. Jasper snorted a laugh, half amused and half annoyed. Curses didn’t scare Ivy either, and she was walking around with half of a soul.

Archie hadn’t seen Jasper looking quite so pleased with himself in a long time. The aetra, as always, stood in his brother’s shadow while Jasper was illuminated by a spotlight. He grinned at the huge crowd that surrounded him in the ringmaster’s tent, his arms spread wide to welcome them all. 
 

“Your efforts have saved the circus!” The jinx announced. He paused to allow the crowd to hoot and holler and clap, then motioned for silence. He was quickly obeyed. Archie had always been baffled at how Jasper could hold such power over so many. “The damage has been repaired and you can now enjoy all our amazing attractions. It’s as safe as it ever has been,” he finished with a dark sort of laugh. Gregory cackled, the crowd stood, and soon there was a stampede to get outside.

Albrecht was fighting to keep the sinister smile on his face, to direct each visitor into the Chamber with a few spooky words. He’d thought that with Jasper’s Circus closed, his own attraction would be overflowing, but no! Just like Misticans had rallied around a sick Jasper last year, they were now apparently training vermin to go out and find supplies to rebuild the Pandoria-cursed circus!

 I need to distract them, Albrecht thought as he turned to enter the Chamber himself. It presented no danger to him of course; he could get through it with his eyes closed, and none of the monsters dared bother their keeper.

It didn’t take the koko long to finish his task. If Misticans were going to be ruining Lanturnacht with goodwill and selflessness, he just had to play into their baser desires. Some new things to hunt for, then, and if Albrecht was lucky some of his customers would never leave.

There is still the missing halo to find as well!


Albrecht is certianly tricky this year- every time he adds new items, the maze changes ever so slightly! 
Remember the zisscor statues will take you to the beginning of the maze.

“This will take until the Feast of Giving to fix!” Skreetch declared loudly, waving his hook for emphasis. He and his fellow employees had spent the last few days attempting to pick up ruined tents, snapped poles and chewed-up candy, but the circus was nowhere near ready for guests. It still looked like a tornado had ripped through.
 

Valerie crossed her arms and huffed loudly. “Why hasn’t Jasper asked for help? We can’t do this by ourselves!”

Elijah laughed. The frodrinn turned a red glare on him but he ignored her. “Jasper won’t want guests to see the circus like this. It hasn’t been in such a bad state since he took over.”

“That cursed machine!” Valerie suddenly blurted out.

“You mean the machine I told you to maintain?” Jasper strolled up with his usual crooked grin, though it had no mirth in it now, “Valerie, come with me.”

Skreetch huffed, studying his podium through narrowed, angry eyes. Bits of wood were scattered around the podium’s base, their source being the enormous gouges the Pandoria-cursed Lanturats had chewed into it. Hopping back atop his perch, the panju was met with a depressing scene.

The circus, always loud with screams and laughter, was so quiet Skreetch could actually hear his beasts growling from inside the Sideshow. Jasper’s vivid tents had been turned into confetti by greedy teeth, and their remnants were nothing but tattered rags waving in the wind.

He saw Jimbo with a large sign on one shoulder and talking to the remaining few circus-goers, gesturing with his free hand, and Skreetch realized that the gourix was turning people away. The panju’s claws rapped on the podium but there was nothing he could do. Jasper’s Circus was unsafe; every tent and game had to be repaired. His own Sideshow was one of the few things untouched, but Skreetch figured the Lanturats had just been too smart to enter a maze of hungry monsters.

Finally Jimbo slammed the sign up and he shuffled away. Skreetch hopped over and slammed his hook down angrily; it was as he’d feared.

The circus is closed!


Luckily for Mistica, Albrecht Von Emmerich is ready and waiting to open up his Chamber of Evil in the Banshee swamp!
 
 
"Wecome, enter if you DARE Misticans. A few treasure await the adventurous that can safely navigate my maze. Though to collect all my goodies this year will require many trips. "

What a cryptic welcome! Dive into the Chamber of Evil and be on the lookout for these two special items!

Refresher on our Flash Maze:
You will recieve steps every day.
You may increase your steps in the maze by activities onsite.
While in the maze, certain events may be triggered that may increase or decrease your steps.
WARNING:
Please be aware of some of the consequences that may fall upon you, should you choose to enter the Chamber of Evil. Your pet could have it's food level changed or you could lose an item from your inventory! There are rewards for your bravery however, so what do you say?

A half-dead candle cast a fraction of Jasper’s desk in a fitful circle of light. Back aching, the Jinx groaned and stretched. He could still hear the squeaking of Lanturats outside of his tent and the frantic attempts of well-meaning Misticans trying to catch them.


Jasper was convinced popcorn had magical powers. Every time he thought his circus was clear, someone would overturn a tent corner or move a desk, and there would be a whole mountain of it, topped with snacking Lanturats! It was maddening.

Jasper had been craving a distraction lately, what with Archie still touchy about the circus, and finally one had come!

 

With Gregory grinning atop his head and his coat tails blowing about in the fall breeze, Jasper looked quite impressive, gesturing to the new Lava Fishing game and the inferno gourix who ran it. “Step up but do mind your step!” The Jinx’s voice bellowed across the circus grounds, “Those vermin have made a mess but that won’t stop the circus! Try your hand at fishing...in hot lava! There are prizes to be won for those brave enough!”

What to do..
On a Thursday night in October in Mistica?

TRICK OR TREAT!!!
Everyone can trick or treat once an hour as the event gets under way. Champions are able to knock on doors every 45 mins. 

    

Make sure to head to your preferences if you want to take advantage of one of our new door knockers*, or perhaps an old favorite? There are MANY to choose from!
*Angel wings are reserved for Champion accounts. They are spelled to ward off demons I hear!


In Preferences, you can also set your trick or treat ratio! Are you feeling a little devilish? Want to send out way more tricks than treats? Well it's your perogative!
There are some nifty new treats to find though!
 
 Candy Corn Pommekins?


 If you are really lucky, you'll find one of these new candy Bowls!


Each one, when opened will give you a random amount of candy items!

Remember, on top of being exotic foods, limited to this event, candy can also be turned in for Lanturancht Points at some point during October to exchange for some amazing items!

Jasper stopped several paces outside of his tent, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the excited chatter of the circus members as they prepared for opening in a few days time. Why did Archie have to pick now, of all times, to start this argument? He could feel himself shaking with anger from the confrontation, and even Gregory wasn’t managing to calm him. Still, he reached up and tapped the hat in thanks for the effort. The best thing to do now, Jasper decided, was to simply make sure things were going as planned. Having something else to focus on was the best thing for his anger.

Slowly, he worked his way around the circus grounds, stopping by with everyone and making sure that nothing needed tending to. Everything seemed to be going well which, normally, he would have appreciated. Right now, though, he terribly needed a distraction and there seemed to be none around. Instead of helping, his mood was only becoming darker. It seemed the circus truly was doing well enough without him.

The castle held a chill this fall, at least to Aibrean, who was used to the humidity and warmth of Darkwood Hollow. A coat much too big for her little self hung off her shoulders but did the job of keeping her warm. Aibrean wasn't sure about some of the spookier tales she had to stock the Library with today, but had to admit they were appropriate for the season.

She'd heard that the two new scary tomes were stocking at the Haunted Library. Definitely not somewhere a sprite frequented!

The Aetra’s hands shook as he pocketed his money, fighting back the sting of tears that prickled at his eyes. This circus was his! He would not let Jasper have it, even if he had shown some sense in running it. After all, Archie had done just fine last year without Jasper’s help! He’d introduced new games and prizes, everything had been a big success. He’d embraced the fact that this was no longer his father’s circus, and come to realize that it was okay to change things. Still, he would not stand for the circus that his father left him to be in the hands of Jasper.

“What right do you have to speak of our father?” Archie snapped. “Our father worked all his life to make this circus great. All of Mistica loved our circus! He even had the heart to take you in, despite how everyone said it was a bad idea, and look what he got for it! He’s dead! He died because of you and your stupid curse, Jasper! Just because you don’t have anything left of your family doesn’t give you the right to take away what my father left me.”
 

Archie’s eyes widened a bit as he realized what he’d said. Anger had a way of making people say things they wouldn’t normally. He regretted the words almost as soon as the were out of his mouth, but there was no taking them back. The look of Jasper’s eyes going cold had Archie feeling sick, and he nearly jumped out of his skin when the Jinx’s hand slammed down onto the table. Papers scattered over the floor, and Gregory startled awake. Archie watched the hat as it scrambled up onto Jasper’s head, the papers as the settled to the floor, anything but his brother across the table.

“Father’s death was an accident. It had nothing to do with me.”

The circus has arrived, and is busy setting up for their festivities, looks like there's some tension with the brothers this year!


Archie stood outside of Jasper’s tent, watching the edges flutter in the breeze. He’d found himself here several times over the past few days, but somehow he’d always managed to find an excuse to walk away without going inside. Not this time, he told himself. This time he was going in and getting this over with, even if it did feel like most of his insides were trying to make a quick exit out of his mouth. He tried to swallow back the lump, took a few deep breaths, and drug his feet forward. Three steps. Two steps. His arm seemed to lift and move aside the tent flap of its own accord as he took the last step inside.

There was Jasper, pouring over some paper or other, Gregory settled on the table beside him. Archie waited for a few seconds, but when the Jinx did not acknowledge his presence, he moved further inside until he stood just on the other side of the table. “Jasper, we need to talk.” Still the Jinx ignored him, and Archie felt the familiar flash of irritation towards his brother. So he reached inside his jacket and pulled out a thick envelope, slamming it down on the table. The resulting thump finally grabbed him some attention, and Jasper sighed, sitting back in his chair to eye the envelope curiously.

“What’s this?” Jasper asked.

“It’s payment,” Archie answered, folding his arms over his chest. When Jasper simply looked at him, one eyebrow lifted, he gave an exasperated sigh. “For the circus. I’m paying off my loan. I want my circus back.”

Jahzara paused her story and settled her skirt around her, allowing the crowd to talk amongst themselves for a few minutes. Many knew that Jasper and Archie were brothers, but it seemed that not many had stopped to wonder how an Aetra and a Jinx could be that. Eventually, though, she cleared her throat and the chatter immediately died down. The storyteller smiled to herself, knowing she had captured her audience.

“Several years later, when Jasper was just beginning his teenage years, the circus settled for a few weeks in a far off corner of Mistica, where magic reigns and all sorts of unusual things happen. After all, even there people want to be entertained. While there, Archibald came into possession of a locked trunk. No one was really sure what was inside, but the person who gave it to the circus master seemed quite happy to be rid of the thing. Archibald stashed the trunk away in storage with the rest of the extra circus supplies, and promptly forgot about it. A trunk he could not open was of any use to him. Perhaps he could sell it sometime and make a profit.

Jasper, however, was fascinated with the thing. It seemed just as interested in him, too. Whenever Jasper came near the supply tent, the trunk would rattle and groan. The first few times, Jasper didn’t seem to notice this. With each passing, the rattling grew louder, and louder, until eventually the Jinx stopped and ventured into the supply tent. As he grew closer, the trunk shook until it seemed that it should have broken itself apart. Showing a bit of normality, Jasper grew curious and tried to open the trunk. The lid remained firmly shut, and he slammed his foot into the wooden side in a fit of anger. What resulted was a flash of Jinx magic that worked its way into the lock. With a soft click, the lid creaked open.

Jahzara watched from the shadows of her little caravan as the residents of Mistica gathered once again on the first eve of the Lanturnacht season. Every year, she spent this special night out in the open fields where masses could gather and grow as large as they wished, and every year the citizens of this world did not disappoint. The storyteller smiled in the twilight, watching them chatter and call their greetings to one another, but as the last rays of the sun faded, a hush fell over the crowd. They stilled together, almost as if they were one collective being instead of many, and turned expectantly towards the fire. As the moons peeked over the horizon and into the sky, she stepped into the ring of dancing orange light.

“Good evening, my friends.” Her voice was not unduly loud, but in the expectant silence, it carried with ease across the open plains of grass. A small smirk tilted the corner of the cheran’s mouth. “You have all come to hear my story once again. It fills me with happiness to know my tales enchant you so. However…” Jahzara paused, enjoying the soft murmur that came from the crowd. “This year, I do not feel like telling the same old story. This year, I will tell you a different tale.” At this, the murmur turned into a loud chatter, and the storyteller had to wait several minutes for the excitement to die down before she was once again able to speak.

“We all know and love our faithful circus master, Jasper Jinx. But let me ask you this: what do any of us truly know of him, besides his name?” Waiting for her question to settle, the storyteller slowly looked over the crowd, each face as blank as the next. No, they did not know much about Jasper at all, except that they enjoyed his circus quite a bit. Moving to the lone chair that sat within the fire light, Jahzara settled herself in, and gave the crowd a conspiratorial grin. “Tonight, my friends, I wish to tell you the story of Jasper.”
