“Oh no…” MeriKlaus stared out of her bedroom window only to realize she couldn’t see out of it. Completely white and glimmering with ice, it might as well have been part of the wall.
The mericai hurriedly donned a robe, ran down the hall, through her workshop (dispersing confused and newly caffeinated poofs on the way) and threw open the front door. Her heart sank.
Hope had warmed her heart the day before when Aurelius had told her of the toy drive, but now MeriKlaus stared down the worst white-out in Blizzard Realm history. Powerful winds howled past the door so thick with snow that even Roustig’s light wouldn’t have penetrated them.
How could she deliver Mistmas presents in this weather? Boreal wouldn’t let up before then; MeriKlaus was sure the queen was throwing all of her remaining powers into this blizzard to kill any good spirits left.
“You saw it?” Aurelius’s familiar voice came from behind MeriKlaus, who nearly jumped out of her robe.
She nodded sadly. “I’ve held her off for centuries, Aurelius, but this…she’s only once come close to winning, and that was so long ago. My stignightus can’t get through this. No one can get through this storm!”
“She’s losing. She’s putting everything into this storm because we’re starting to win, MeriKlaus,” Aurelius said, “You can’t let her take your spirit as well!”
MeriKlaus shuddered at that. “I know. But my stignightus still can’t navigate this.”
“Show me the stignightus,” Aurelius said.
MeriKlaus looked confused but took him out back to the stables, which were as warm as the inside of the shop. Completely covered and decked out in poinsettias and holly, the stignightus all looked quite comfortable away from all the snow.
“You all have a duty,” Aurelius reminded them. Every head perked up and ears swiveled in the direction of the star’s haunting voice. Glowing orbs cast bright, moving light all over the stables and Aurelius practically shone. “But Boreal has you trapped. I can help, if you’re all willing?”
At once, the stignightus tossed their heads and huffed loudly. Hooves made hollow drum beats on the stable’s floor and Aurelius smiled.
“I thought so,” he said happily, “get ready!”
An expectant silence fell over the stables as, suddenly, the air itself grew warmer. Aurelius breathed deeply and approached the first stignightus, who reached out its snout so the star could lay a hand on its forehead.
The heat intensified until it was like standing in front of a bonfire. Light engulfed the stignightus until even its silhouette was overtaken by a miniature sun. Pinks, blues, purples and greens all streaked through the light, pulsing, disappearing and reappearing, alive.
Then the light faded, and standing in the stignightus’s place was an enormous equine. Thickly muscled but with a graceful step the new creature trotted about in the stall, tossing its mane and looking down on Aurelius with bright eyes.
The star smiled and went to each stignightus, blessing every one.
“They’re strong enough now,” Aurelius said with satisfaction, “The snow won’t impede them any longer.”
MeriKlaus felt like she had to pick her jaw up off the floor. “Aurelius…this is amazing! They’re beautiful!”
“You’re the greatest force against Boreal that Mistica has,” Aurelius reminded her, “Love cannot fail. Show her that.”
MeriKlaus nodded. Now, it was time to work!
