Benni coughed, his long red whiskers shaking, and was glad he could let his accordion sing on its own for a time. A look back showed him the murky, fog-laden forest of the Banshee Swamp, his home, where the air was warm and moist. He hadn’t gone very far, but the green hills between the swamp and Bamboo Beach Resort lacked trees to keep in any sort of heat or damp. A cool breeze rustled the soft blades and Benni coughed again.
He simply wanted to avoid waking the Rougarou this year, but maybe playing his accordion outside the swamp wasn’t such a great idea after all. Still, he was here, so Benni thought he might as well explore before the dryness became unbearable and he had to go back.
Accompanied by the strains of his accordion the crayfish scuttled over the grass, grateful at least that the morning dew hadn’t completely evaporated. After a short while, just when he was thinking the sun was getting a bit too bright for his own good, Benni spotted a building up on top of a hill. It was pale grey and purple, paneled in huge windows that let in the light and also gave him a perfect view of the inside. What he saw made Benni scuttle faster.
Music! Guitars, flutes, drums, and even some of those fancy MP3 players that Benni always managed to drop in the swampy water practically glittered in those big windows. It seemed a bit of an odd place to put a store, though Benni thought that the Bamboo Beach Resort tourists probably gave good business. And the Rougarou had proven that musicians and their noise wasn’t always welcome in others’ hearing.
Benni found his way up the hill and entered the shop – Heartsong Music, said the bold black letters above the door – gazing about in wonder at the myriad of instruments. They were on shelves, displayed on the floor, hung up on walls…
Then, Benni heard a door behind the counter shut, and a storm stignightus appeared. For a moment, she looked confusedly at the open door of her shop, then glanced down and saw Benni staring around. He blinked and grinned sheepishly, realizing he probably looked quite stupid, and the loveliness of the stignightus didn’t help his brain work any better. She was slender and graceful, with an easy smile as she leaned over the counter to talk to him.
“Looking for anything specific?” She asked.
Benni shook his head. “No, just…curious,” he answered quickly.
The stignightus tilted her head for a moment as though trying to get the measure of him, then slapped one hoof on the counter in sudden realization. “Bayou Benni!” She said loudly, “I thought you seemed familiar. Revelry going smoothly, then? No Rougarou yet?”
Benni shook his head again. He felt like a defective bobble head doll.
“Well, feel free to look around; I figure you know what you’re doing,” she said with another grin, “I’m Harmony, by the way, and I have to go find some more red guitars; they sell so quickly…” And with that, she disappeared behind the door again, leaving Benni quite disoriented.
