Sherry says Wow, Speech Pathology - that is awesome! You will help so many kiddos!!! One of my good friends from college was in SP & Audiology and she loved it. There is a crazy amount to learn, but it should be rewarding. If your district offers it, consider a position in middle school - Alex had to interview a SP for one of his graduate courses and she said middle and high school are definitely less complicated than elementary. As to finding teaching positions - be willing to move. That way you can find the right job for you. Alex interviewed all over the state both times he was looking - going as far as 1 1/2 hours away. As it turns out the first job was only 30 minutes away and the current one is 45 minutes away. Since he always gets an apartment near the school, the distance isn't an issue, but I am glad he isn't more than an hour away. |
Sherry says Very cool - it is good to get research practice in before grad school. Alex's plan was to teach game design at the college level, so after graduation he started his MS in Interactive Media and Game Design. Unfortunately the program was too small and the classes he needed for his Serious Play concentration kept getting cancelled. While he was in his 2nd semester of grad school, he started a graduate certificate in College Teaching. One of his professors mentioned teaching this type of class in K-12. So in May 2016 he passed several of the teacher tests and was hired to teach high school game design, animation, electronic music and video production. He started his M.Ed. in Instructional Technology that same summer. That first job wasn't a good fit. The classes and students were great, but there was not enough support for a new teacher and way too many different classes, so he left that school and found a middle school job teaching Digital Literacy and Computer Science. The school is awesome and he is in his 2nd year there. He finished his M.Ed. in May and is working on his 300 hour practicum this semester in order to advance to the next level of teaching license. It has been a wild ride, but he loves it! My sister teaches HS Drama and my niece has taught K and 1st and is currently teaching the Head Start Pre-K. She also loves it! |
