Elsewhere in Mistica...
Posted: July 30, 2014

“WHAT?!” an angry voice pierced the air. A kohal shivered in the corner, but it wasn't the icy cold that was to be expected at Boreal's castle that made her do it. The ice-hearted queen glared angrily at her, spilled wine dripping down a table from an overturned chalice. Another kohal hurried forward to clean it up before she noticed, even though it was her fault the wine had spilled in the first place. “You dare disturb me while I'm recovering with such news?” she demanded of the cowering kohal.

“Y-your highness,” she said in a squeaky voice, “forgive me for my lack of foresight.”

Boreal dismissed the kohal and sat back in her cushioned chair, her white eyes blazing. “Brainless rocks,” she snarled to no one in particular, “setting up shop...as though Perryn would be strong enough to lift a hammer without my blessing.”

Her servant fetched her another chalice of wine once he'd cleaned the spilled one up. “What do you want us to do, Your Highness?” he asked her timidly.

Boreal's outburst had left her feeling dizzy and lightheaded. Curse that overgrown tree for what he did! She thought furiously. “You will send a messenger to the imps. We will need aid to put those slaves back in their places.”
….....

King Mephitic was bewildered when a great wintercursed belragoth landed before him. He immediately recognized him as the messenger of the dark queen, Boreal, and stood before him, approaching him with a murderous look on his face. “What business have you here?” he demanded.

The belragoth spoke in a deep, booming voice that reverberated around the imp king's castle. “Queen Boreal has a proposal for an alliance with your...” He looked around distastefully at the gloomy and nightmarish décor, “mighty kingdom.”

“An alliance? What need does she have with us?” Mephitic demanded.

“My queen seeks aid in recovering two traitorous kohals who have escaped her servitude and seek to profit off of her gifts.”
Mephitic
Mephitic laughed in his face, a daring act considering the temperament of the average belragoth. “And why should we help her? What would be in it for us?”

The belragoth was unperturbed by the imp king's rudeness as he'd been warned to expect it. “She promises gifts of wealth...”

“Bah!” Mephitic interrupted. “I have plenty of wealth. I don't need any from her.”
|
“She also promises to share some of her dark spells with you,” the belragoth continued.

“I have dark spells of my own as well. If there is nothing you can promise me that I don't already own, then be gone. I have more important things to tend to than that witch's silly demands.” He turned away from the messenger and began to march back to his throne.

“I thought you should be this way.” Mephitic spun around at the sound of another voice. The belragoth lowered his wings, revealing Boreal to be sitting atop him, and helped lower her to the floor. “Which is why I have another bartering chip. The sprites...”

“What about them?” Mephitic asked. His interest was piqued at the mention of his rivals.

“They are aiding the gargoyles and gurahdia to achieve their goals. Help me achieve mine and you will have a chance at throwing a wrench into their whole operation.” She smiled darkly when she saw the contemplative look on Mephitic's face. “You have been beaten badly quite often, yes? With my help you might just triumph this time.”

Mephitic scowled; he didn’t like to be reminded of his defeats. But the queen was right. “Hmm...I like that. Yes. In fact I like it a lot,” Mephitic nodded. “Alright Boreal, we'll help you get your kohals back. What did you have in mind?”
.....

Using a tracking spell conjured up by the ice queen herself, the imps arrived at the Quarry under the cover of night. “Look around!” the head scout ordered before they began snooping around carts carrying old rocks and gems, looking for a sign of Soraya or Perryn.

They were not as stealthy as they thought. “Imps? What are they doing way out here?” the first gargoyle scout asked. He looked through a telescope at the vile creature making its way around a camp of sleeping miners, one of them stopping to snatch an item or two.

“After the sprites no doubt,” their leader said. “We must warn Chief Blackrock and the sprites at once. The imps can't be up to any good.”

Book Collections will end this evening, stay tuned as things heat up in this plot!

A Reveal...
Posted: July 28, 2014

Raimia’s eyes shone like sapphires as she, Dakota and Alan stepped through the massive doors of the repository. The first room had been cleared, revealing high, tiled stone ceilings supported by thick pillars.

Most importantly, though, were the relics and exhibits, carefully draped and left untouched by the laborers so that Alan and his team could restore and catalog them properly.

“It’s the history of our people.” Raimia’s voice was filled with awe. She drifted amongst the relics, dreamlike, her hands open but held close as if she desperately wanted to touch everything but was afraid to. “These are Chief Obsidana’s!” She said, gesturing to ancient spears hung on the wall, one of the few relics that were visible.

“Moonfeather!” gasped Raimia. She hurried up a short flight of stairs and stared up at a peaceful looking statue of a gurahdi.

Alan peered through his glasses at a wartime mural. It was torn in places but he could still make out the scene. “Could this be from Nighthawk’s last stand? Or maybe it’s the siege of Sor’u’doon? At a rough guess, I’d say this dates back beyond the Blackrock dynasty, but the quality of the paint is too good to be any earlier than Stormcrusher’s rule.” He jotted a quick note before pulling out a soft brush to clean away the dirt for a closer look.

Dakota, however, seemed to be the only one concerned by a pile of bones that had been arranged. Deftly, he gathered a few stray pieces. His instincts told him to be wary of traps, and so his dark eyes darted to every corner suspiciously.

He stayed with that pile of bones, engrossed for what seemed the longest time, when he finally stepped back, it was quite a sight to behold!

He moved around the walls, looking for seams, until he had found the outline of a door at the top of the stairs. "I knew there was more than this room," he said aloud to no one in particular, “We’re still going to need everyone’s help.” Alan nodded, glancing around at the treasures contained. “And be sure they’re careful; this stuff belongs in museums--I don’t want to see anything damaged.”

Raimia spoke up once more, "I need books, from all over the lands of Mistica. I need to look for more information. Quickly, bring them while we carefully explore!"

A Doorway Revealed!
Posted: July 26, 2014

Cheers rose up around the site of digging as the last cartfuls of rock had been hauled away. A carved door faced them, a rougher tunnel to one side.

Excitement gleamed in Alan and Raimia's eyes, determination in Dakota's.

"Stay back everyone, we do not know what we will find within, now is the time for caution and restraint. Rest, and gather your strength, we will have use for you again soon!"

The three figures approached the door, Dakota in the lead. At a nod from Raimia, a gargoyle stepped forward to supply a torch. The trio entered the darkness and soon their torch could not be seen.

There is still rubble to clear and a bit of finishing digging, so you may continue to dig this evening Mistica in the hopes of a Jade Malphi and the avatar. Each will be available in the plot shop as well!

A Glimpse!
Posted: July 24, 2014

Alan watched as strong gargoyles and other Misticans, under Raimia’s command, hauled wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow full of dirt, rocks and other debris away from the excavation site. The sun glared off the mountain side, and Alan wondered how they could even bear it.

“If only I were younger...” Alan lamented with a sigh. The repository was within a hoof’s reach, and he couldn’t even help find the front door because his bones couldn’t handle the labor.

From over the rims of his spectacles, Alan noticed Dakota walking amongst the gargoyles and gurahdia on site, even looking in their barrels and buckets on occasion. Alan hobbled over, looking into the bin that Dakota had just glanced in.

“Something catch your eye, Dakota?” asked Alan. He glanced over loose sand and tiny fossils, secretly hoping for an old pottery fragment or mosaic piece.

“Some of these ores are quite valuable,” Dakota answered after a moment. He lifted a dull looking rock ribbed with red glimmers. “I’m pretty sure this is unrefined ruby. And over there, they’ve been pulling out a ton of iron ore.” He gestured with his paw. “It’s making things difficult--but it seems wasteful just to pitch all this.”

“And do what? Make a necklace out of it? You know I’m only interested in jewelry if it’s at least three thousand years old,” Alan joked.

“Actually, that sounds like a great idea.” A sweet voice caught Alan’s attention, and both he and Dakota turned. A lovely, sparkling white kohal approached them. By her side was a dark, muscular kohal with a large mallet over his shoulder. Alan had seen him before, breaking up sandstone chunks for the gargoyles to haul away.

However, Alan hardly noticed the darker kohal this time. “Um..p-pardon?” He couldn’t help but gawk at her beauty.

“My name is Soraya; I’m a jeweler by trade.” She smiled. “And this is Perryn; Boreal endowed him with forging talents.” She took the ruby from Dakota’s paws, turning it over excitedly.

“What are kohals doing in Metropolis Quarry?” Dakota asked. He couldn’t help but feel a little suspicious; they were, after all, ready-made servants of a queen bent on world domination.

Perryn grunted while Soraya’s smile trembled as she spoke, “We were banished; after wandering lost for many months, we came here. The gurahdia took us in.” Soraya shook her head as if trying to dislodge bad memories. “But life here has been much better than we ever could have hoped for. We are even about to set up shop.” Her smile returned.

Soraya continued, though Perryn remained quiet, seeming to observe everyone before him rather than speak. “We heard rumors that with all this digging, there might be some treasures, and we’re both so glad that those rumors are true.” Excitement glistened in her eyes. “Please, pass the word around. If you or anyone you know has the right gems and metals, we’ll smelt them into something wonderful!”

“Of course we will,” Alan replied immediately, finally backing down a bit when he felt Dakota elbow him in the side.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Progress is made!  And how interesting to find two kohal so far from the barren wasteland of Queen Boreal's kingdom...
The Lost Door
Posted: July 22, 2014
The day was breaking slowly, the sun beginning its journey but only streaks of pink and red could be seen in the distance. Alan and Dakota met with the impressive figure of Raimia, leader of the gurahdia. Though she held no title, her bearing, her halla, and staff proclaimed her station for all to know.
"I have consulted with the knowledge of the gurahdia, and worked my magic to show us where to dig. The time is now at hand, to reclaim the lost knowledge."
With a wave of her staff, that coincided with the sun breaking upon the horizon, illuminating a broad expanse of rock that seemed impenatrable.
"This is were we shall dig, and where we will reclaim the lost knowledge for the world of Mistica."
Alan and Dakota looked at one another, and turned to face the crowd that had gathered. There were many eager faces, shining with hope and excitement. Centuries had passed, the Lost Door had become a fairy tale told to children as bedtime stories.  They were party to a reclaiming of history that would send shockwaves through the entire world.
Alan began, "Join with us! The gurahdia and gargoyle clans have assembled pickaxes and shovels for all to participate that wish to help."
Dakota continued, "This will not be easy, but together, we can make a difference." He accepted a pickaxe from a gargoyle that was standing near. With a resounding CRACK, he landed the first blow of many on the rock face, a determined gleam in his eye.
Chief BlackRock
Posted: July 21, 2014
They had finally reached the hall of the Gargoyles after quite a long journey. Made all the longer by Alan's slower gait. However, the yehxil proved his stamina by completing the journey.
“Blackrock, Chief of the gargoyles and Guardian of the Lost Door,” the guard announced as Dakota and Alan approached the throne. Then he saluted, turned smartly on his bare heel and left.
Click the image above for a larger version!
Chief Blackrock lived up to his name far too well for Dakota’s liking. The dark-skinned gargoyle seemed to have a scowl permanently etched upon his long, scarred face, and his broad shoulders were thrown back to make himself seem even taller than he was. Looking down from a seat of glistening obsidian inset with rubies, Blackrock regarded his visitors while holding a silver warhammer that looked too heavy to lift from the ground.
“It took you two long enough to arrive. Maury should have had that note in your hands weeks ago, Alan,” the chief began.
“He’s not known for reliability,“ the old archaeologist shrugged, “And it took Dakota here a day’s brooding to decide whether to come or not.”
Dakota glared at his companion but bit back what he longed to say.
“The ‘lost door’ of our legends has, we believed, been found. My people know how to work stone, but we have never worked to preserve it before, and what is beyond the door is too important to lose. You two will oversee the excavation to be sure that nothing is damaged,” Blackrock declared, and it was clear by his tone that refusal was not an option.
“And what are we looking for?” Dakota asked, “You like rubies, I see.”
“A repository of some sort. Knowledge, magic, weapons -- we don’t know for sure. But it must be unearthed and guarded and studied. I’ll take you to the site.” And Blackrock  hefted his hammer, pushed right past Dakota and Alan, and led the way down through the palace out to the quarry itself.
“So where is this dig site?” Dakota demanded. He saw a beautifully worked city, certainly, but nothing to denote any digging going on. No areas were roped off, no grids built…
“Raimia leads the gurahdia and has been working with her magic to pinpoint where to start. In the meantime, you two will stay in the palace. Explore if you wish, and be ready tomorrow.” The chief's word was final, so Alan and Dakota set to retire for the evening. Seeing the city tomorrow in full light would have to be enough for now.
A Journey Begins!
Posted: July 20, 2014
They would embark on their journey just after sunrise. It was still dark outside when Dakota took his place at the window to watch for Alan. Strangely, as the minutes passed, Dakota found his longing for the company of his old colleague grow stronger and stronger. He looked forward to seeing the yehxil, armed with his trusty cane, trudge up to the door, wan sunlight sparkling about the horns on his head. If there was one thing that always impressed the Traveler about Alan, it was the way he always managed to maintain a certain glow, through times of joy, tribulation, and confusion.
He recalled the time the two of them uncovered a magnificent Jinx skeleton someplace near the Metropolis Quarry. For days, the thing was nothing more to either man than a mess of dust and weathered bones that skin abandoned long ago. The unknown ate away at the Traveler. He could not rest until he knew what massive creature once roamed the Mistica he thought he knew so well. Alan, on the other hand, accepted the unknown with little reluctance. Soon after Dakota had gone to bed, he settled near the dying fire, a petrified jawbone in his hand, and studied it until his eyes grew too tired and the final embers died.
Wait, the quarry! The bones! The artifacts! Something about that place…
“So, Traveler, think you still have some adventure left in those old bones of yours?” Alan chuckled.
The voice shook the lirionox from his reverie. “So says the old man,” Dakota retorted.
With a sigh, Alan walked to the table where the parchment sat cryptic and glaring. Dakota joined him.
“Time to pay Blackrock a visit.”
~~~~~~~~~

Be sure to check back soon, they are on their way to meet Chief Blackrock!

July Books!
Posted: July 19, 2014

Aibrean leaned out her tower window. She could see the distant light of the Traveler's cabin up on his hill, and she wondered when he would leave again. The lirionox never stayed long. Rumors in the castle said he had received a strange visitor, and something about a note...

Aibrean knew all too well the Traveler's past, having helped document it, and she wondered what was about to happen. She very much wanted to knock on his door and ask, but he would likely bite her head off, and she had books to organize anyway.

The book on Ahbruis Markings was brand new, of course, a donation from Arnold of Village Books; Aibrean handled the rare volume carefully.

Watch out for Aibrean's quiz, coming soon in Mistic Chat!

A Decision.
Posted: July 17, 2014

Thoughts seemed to constantly turn over in Dakota's mind over the next couple of days, as he dwelled on the parchment that Alan had shown him. He needed to make his final decision soon. Leaning back in his worn chair, Dakota let out a prolonged sigh, looking over to his badly mended boots. Dakota rose and shifted to his feet, crossed the small living space of his cabin, and looked out the window at the huge pastel moon that filled the darkness, and the stars that hung low in the velvety skies. He thought about his past, his long lost daughter, and the incredible memories he had travelling the lands and digging up mysteries of the ancient past.

His thoughts were abruptly interrupted by a loud chime from his old cuckoo clock situated in the corner of his cabin. Jumping slightly at the sound, Dakota's eyes rested upon his table. There, ravelled up in the centre was the piece of parchment Alan had left behind. Staring at the paper, a glimmer shined in his eyes, and he almost felt as if an old spark had ignited in his chest. He shook his head, and picked up the paper between his claws, narrowing his eyes as he glared at the hammer and battle axe on the bottom of the parchment.

Closing his eyes, Dakota smiled wryly to himself as he reminisced about the past. Memories flashed into his mind once again as he pictured himself and Alan digging up ancient burial sites, and unearthing great wonders at the repository -- the place where the sigil was created. Dakota opened his eyes and he felt a surge of excitement rush through his body, and he found himself chuckling. All those amazing memories were created in his early years, when he enjoyed spending time digging up fossils and ruins. Since he lost his daughter, Dakota had become a recluse, changed his title to simply "The Traveler", and lost touch with everyone he once knew. A sigh slowly exhaled from his mouth as he wiped his clammy brow with his paw, and he walked back to his old chair.

A few hours later, as the glowing sun began to rise in the Mistic sky, Dakota woke up and rocked back into his chair. He stared out into the distance through his window as he saw the sky fill with delicate hues, and listened as the birds began to sing their melodies. As he looked down at his lap, he saw that familiar piece of parchment glaring straight back at him. Dakota smirked, grabbed the parchment, and picked up his old hat from its peg by the door and set it on his head.

Looks like our Traveler has made a decision! Stay tuned Mistica, looks like he's off to an adventure and you are bound to be able to help!

Strange Indeed...
Posted: July 15, 2014

As the Traveler settled at his rickety wooden table, he glanced out the window and frowned. Bright red was splashed across a darkening sky – sunset already. Two days…too long, the lirionox thought. His cabin seemed to get smaller every hour he remained there. It was past time to get going, and he would have left that moment if not for his worn boots.

He’d barely begun to assess the leather when there was a loud knock on his door. The Traveler rose slowly, one paw on his whip; no one ever visited him, and it was late enough that most respectable Misticans were already settled at home.

The voice he heard next made the lirionox loosen his grip. “Dakota!” All too familiar and all too unwelcome.

For a moment the Traveler wondered if his guest would simply leave if the door wasn’t answered, but then he remembered how terribly stubborn his old colleague was and decided to get the visit over with quickly. With a put upon huff the lirionox pulled the door open and stood there with a scowl.

“Don’t look so sour,” said an old but bright-eyed yehxil, who promptly shouldered his way into the Traveler’s cabin.

“I don’t use that name anymore, Alan,” the Traveler said irritably.

Alan rolled his eyes. “You don’t use any name anymore,” he retorted, “It’s confusing.”

“What do you want?”

Soul Searching!

Everyone get out your black and pink party hedgehogs; it's Zarabeythe's birthday!

Maybe it's all the celebrating, but some very odd magic has been disturbing Mistica today. Even Pandoria isn't quite sure what's going on! Weird bottles have been popping up on shopkeeper's shelves, and while they're all happy to cash in, no one's sure where they came from.

The staff has been a little glassy eyed lately, though...

Oh well. They're probably all just fine.

For those of you still in posession of your soul, go and sign Zarabeythe's birthday card in Mistic Chat! If you don't, a bottle just might be in your future.

Did you know...?
Posted: July 3, 2014

The organization that we sponsor for our Hero Rats has some impressive credentials! They shared with us the following story of how they helped Gaza Province in Mozambique.

(From Apopo)
To rid the world of its landmines is an intimidating goal and Pandoria is realizing this slowly.
But at APOPO we believe that it is a goal that can be accomplished with a strong, focused and collaborative effort. An example that reaffirms this belief is the following:

On 19 December 2012, APOPO, the sole demining operator for the Gaza province in Mozambique, handed over a mine-free Gaza province to the government of Mozambique and Instituto Nacional de Desminagem (IND), the country’s national demining institute. APOPO’s Mine Detection Rats (MDRs) and the Mozambique country staff accomplished this feat over one year before the deadline! Several provinces in Mozambique are still affected by remnants of a war that lasted 30 years and the country has to be rendered completely mine-free by 2014 according to the Mine Ban Treaty deadline. Demining efforts in the last decade focused in the highly affected northern regions of Mozambique, meanwhile several southern provinces such as Gaza fell through the cracks.

APOPO’s mine action program in Gaza started in 2008 and cleared over 6 million square meters of land in the province with a budget of just 5.5 million Euro. In its clearance efforts, the APOPO mine action team comprising of MDRs and manual deminers found 2,393 landmines, 12,838 small arms and ammunitions, and 922 unexploded ordnance.

With the clearance of the Gaza region, APOPO’s rats have proved that innovation and collaboration can indeed produce transformative and impactful results!

We are so thankful to have an opportunity to sponsor TWO HeroRats who are being trained to aid in mine detection and Tuberculosis testing.
Three cheers to Apopo and our Mistic Hero Rats, Pandoria and Aurelius!
