Aurelius's Departure
Posted: December 30, 2014

This year Aurelius’s leaving was a quiet affair. MeriKlaus watched the spectacle from one of King Blithe’s towers; here, the view simply couldn’t be beat. As the shooting star leapt into the dark night sky, it exploded into a myriad of glittering, undulating colors. A band of vivid purple waved over the castle, making the pale snow below look like something from Sango Reef.

Amidst the lights was Frost. MeriKlaus only knew he was around because she’d learned to recognize the silvery trail he left as he darted away. Some Misticans couldn’t quite see him yet; he was too fast, and currently using his speed to nail as many targets as he could with snowballs.

“MeriKlaus!” King Blithe’s deep voice boomed off the walls as he entered. MeriKlaus blinked and smiled at him. “He always puts on a show, hm?”

MeriKlaus laughed. “Aurelius knows how to end the year,” she said, “always with something beautiful. Maybe Boreal will remember that next time…”

Blithe raised an eyebrow.

“Probably not, but…still.” MeriKlaus sometimes wondered if she was naïve, but part of her couldn’t help but hold out hope for the icy queen. Frost seemed to know her; maybe he would help thaw her heart before next Mistmas.

Merry Mistmas!!
Posted: December 25, 2014

King Blithe, Aurelius and Meriklaus chatted happily in Keilly’s cafe; each had a mug of hot cocoa with a candy cane sticking out of it. They talked of Mistmas cheer and viewed the clear night and starry skies; fortunately, Ravi-Sorin was just warm enough to sit outside but just cool enough to enjoy a warm drink.

A sudden chill ran through them all as Frost landed next to their table, stumbling to his knees. He was frantic and out of breath, panting a few times before he could speak. “Please, you have to help her! She could die!” He didn’t even stand, speaking from on his knees as if he were begging.

“Woah! What? Who?” asked Blithe as he caught his mug before it tipped over.

“What’s going on?” Meriklaus asked at the same time.

“Boreal. Please, you have to help her! She’s dying!” Frost begged; his icy eyes shone with concern.

“Boreal!” Aurelius exclaimed.

“Her magic backfired. Please, you have to help!”

~*~*~*~

Meriklaus’s shyre pulled her sleigh and its passengers right in front of Boreal’s castle. It was eerily quiet. The large front door was open, rocking a few inches back and forth in the wind. Frost didn’t hesitate. Before the sleigh had fully stopped, he leapt out and raced inside. Aurelius and King Blithe exchanged an uneasy look before heading inside as well.

The found Frost kneeling next to Boreal, who was unconscious and covered in deep cuts and glass shards. Her breathing was shallow; it didn’t look good.

“If we did nothing, we probably could save ourselves a big headache next year,” Blithe grumbled, only half serious. Frost shot him an ice glare.

“That isn’t how we do things on Mistmas,” Meriklaus lightly scolded.

She placed her hooves together, and light and magic gathered there. Being Mistmas day, her magic was exceptionally strong. Queen Boreal’s wounds healed within a few minutes; her dark eyes fluttered open.

Trying to regain her sense of dignity as a queen, she pulled herself to her feet, glaring at her guests. “What are you doing here?” She stood firmly, hiding the fact her legs still felt weak; she would never willingly show weakness in front of her enemies.

“Are you okay?” Frost asked without acknowledging her question.

“Get out,” Boreal spoke with the warmth of a blizzard. “All of you--get out now!”  Without waiting to see if they’d actually leave, she turned around and stormed deeper into her castle, slamming the doors behind her with a loud thud.

It was awkwardly silent for a moment between the others before King Blithe spoke up, “I suppose it would be asking too much to hear a ‘thank you’.”

“We should respect her wishes and leave,” Meriklaus said. Aurelius nodded in agreement, and they all headed out into the bright morning sun that sparkled off of the fresh snow.

“What happened to her? She doesn’t even know how to have fun any more?” Frost asked; he sounded bewildered and sulky.

“I can’t imagine the queen ever having fun,” Blithe remarked.

“A smile wouldn’t hurt her ever---” Aurelius was cut off when a snow ball nailed him directly in the face. Frost smirked, tossing another snowball up into the air and catching it again. Meriklaus took one look at Aurelius’s dumbstruck expression and fell to her back laughing. “Do you think this is funny?” Aurelius said while spitting out flakes.

“Yes!” Meriklaus barely managed to hiccup amid laughter.

Frost also chuckled until a massive snowball knocked him off his feet. King Blithe whistled innocently as snowy clumps clung to his paws. Meriklaus only laughed harder. Within moments, all four were engaged in a snowball fight, which quickly spread across Mistica as people everywhere celebrated the day with family and friends.

Merry Mistmas, everyone!

Mistmas Eve
Posted: December 24, 2014

Despite Queen Boreal’s best attempts, the north wind came back with all its fury, bringing back purified slivers of the enormous mirror. Each shard sparkled with light and hope from the hearts across Mistica, and the mirror began to reform itself from the outside in. Snowflakes and ice waltzed around the room, looking like small stars dancing.

Boreal tightened her grip on the ornament, which now pulsed with Meriklaus’s magic. “I...won’t let it be this way! Misticans are cruel; that is the truth!” Beads of sweat froze on her head as she exerted all her effort into overcoming the Mistmas spirit itself. She could feel her dark mirror reverberate around her hands as piece by piece returned, but she refused to withdraw.

Her own reflection formed in front of her, showing her as the starling that she once was. Boreal recoiled, “No!” In that moment, she pulled away from the ornament, and all the magic that she had been channeling ran out of control.

Mistmas magic surged and blew away the cold and darkness. The force shattered the mirror as every last ounce of magic fled from it and the winds scattered it across the Diamond Glacier Domain forever.

The force of the explosion threw Boreal backward where she landed hard. Glass had grazed her cheeks and forearms while large pieces embedded themselves in her stomach, chest and neck. True darkness swam in her vision as the last thing she was aware of was her blood freezing on the ground around her.

The only witness was a frosty silhouette, who raced into the night the moment he saw what had happened.

Shining Bright?
Posted: December 23, 2014

Everywhere Blithe’s Mirror of Truth shone, ice melted from Mistican’s hearts. People greeted each other warmly. Caroling filled the nights, and Charitee found her shelves stocked with people’s generosity.

“It did even better than I expected!” Blithe said proudly.

Meriklaus smiled. “Misticans’ natures aren’t cold or bitter or hateful. Especially this time of year. This is the time for benevolence and compassion. Boreal should have known she couldn’t freeze people’s hearts for long.”

“The north wind has even died down,” added Aurelius as he alighted beside the two. “It’s retreating to the Diamond Glacier Domain where it belongs.”

“The weather is still chilly though,” Meriklaus said with a laugh. “It’s going to be a white Mistmas after all.”

“Come on. Let’s go to Keilly’s for some hot cocoa. My treat,” said King Blithe.

~*~*~*~

Away in her castle, Queen Boreal stood watch over a large frame. It had once held a mirror, but the only clue to this were some broken shards still jammed in the sides. Floating on its own in the middle was a star ornament, radiating with a frozen aura. Boreal placed her hands on either side, channeling more magic into it.

“There is only darkness and cold,” she told herself. There was no one around to listen. Even all her kohals were hiding in fear. “I will prove it. In the end, people only care about themselves.”

She could feel the points of the ornament digging into her fingers. She could handle that kind of feeling. But last year, being given a gift without anything expected in return...something she had long since forgotten awoke inside of her. And she didn’t like it. Not one bit.

“Once people see they get nothing out of this ‘Mistmas,’ they will forsake it. Then cold and darkness will reign--that is the true, selfish nature of Mistica,” Boreal thought bitterly. The north wind whipped around her as her magic aura pulsed.

A Hunt!
Posted: December 20, 2014

Meriklaus walked through town, warmly greeting those she passed with all the Mistmas spirit she could muster. Fewer and fewer greeted her back. “Bah, humbug,” was practically becoming the catchphrase of the year.

“But how? How did Boreal manage to scatter so much magic across Mistica during the time we were focusing on the volcano? How could it reach so many Misticans?” Meriklaus tried to spark warmth in people’s hearts, but her joy could only go so far. “Is this all my fault for trying to reach Boreal? If I hadn’t given her that gift, would this have not happened? No...no, I can’t ever believe that kindness is in vain.”

She stopped by a street vendor for some roasted chestnuts. Wind whipped through her mane, and she turned her head to keep it from her eyes. She caught a glimpse of her reflection in a nearby shop window. It only lasted a second, but she saw herself with venom green eyes and fangs; her horns twisted upward, and her mouth curled into a snarl. Meriklaus backpedaled as she felt icy fingers try to grab her heart.

“Reflections!” She spun and raced down the street, colliding with Aurelius on the outskirts of town.

“I know how she did it!” both exclaimed at each other in unison. “You figured it out?”

Meriklaus nodded. “She’s cursed reflections to draw out the darker nature of Misticans everywhere. She’s managed to reverse my magic to bring out anger and selfishness instead of joy and generosity.”

“She used the north wind to carry the spell,” added Aurelius. He held out a handful of snowflakes with silvery shards mixed in. “I caught this while searching the Diamond Glacier Domain. These glass shards are filled with her magic--and the wind is carrying it everywhere in Mistica. I can only imagine what will happen if this continues.” He shuddered and not from the cold.

“We won’t let that happen,” Meriklaus said with more confidence than she felt. “We will reverse this. Misticans’ true natures aren’t calloused and cruel.”

~*~*~*~

Looks like it's time to hunt Mistica! Remember those three shopkeepers from earlier today? Well, go visit them again, and get started. If you complete all three of the clue paths, you'll receive these three shards!

If you take these three to King Blithe in the Blizzard Domain, you'll be able to combine them to make:

And we'll turn this Mistmas around, and reignite the Yultide Spirit's joy!

Holiday Spirit?
Posted: December 20, 2014

Others were indeed acting oddly.

MeriKlaus had left to speak to King Blithe, so Aurelius had decided to visit the Scarab Desert and see if the animosity he’d seen in the Blizzard’s Realm had spread.

No snow was to be seen here. Sand stretched out, a golden blanket bathed in bright winter sunlight, and Aurelius could feel the heat rising around his feet. Still, a cold knot formed in his stomach. What if the volcano hadn’t been Boreal’s only trick? The star wandered into Ravi-Sorin, past colorful tents and anyai in white robes, deciding that if anyone had some Mistmas cheer it would be Keilly.
Keilly
She, however, did not even look up when Aurelius entered. Instead she had her attention focused on a customer who was all but cowering before the usually chipper cheran as she berated them to make their order more quickly.

Aurelius didn’t even bother to stick around. Who else had such frozen hearts this Mistmas?

He took off and landed in the Inferno Terrain, where yelling immediately assaulted his ears.

“This is a place of class, and you wear THOSE? Couldn’t bother to take five minutes and buff the scuffs out? Disgusting!” Lance snarled, shutting the door in a customer’s face. They yelled back before turning and stomping off.

So too it was when Aurelius thought Kandie would be a good one to visit. The nokwi was in her store, studying a Razor Pomme rather intently. Aurelius decided to simply back away quietly and leave before she saw him.

~~~~~~~~~~
MeriKlaus sighed. “Something terrible is happening, and I know it’s Boreal,” she said grimly, after Aurelius had accounted to her what he’d seen.
“It has to be. But how would she get enough power? Even if she recovered, she expended herself freezing the volcano,” Aurelius pointed out, “What she’s doing takes incredible magic.”
They sat in silence for a moment, and then MeriKlaus realized what Boreal had done. An icy grip took hold of her heart at the thought. “It was me,” she said quietly, “the star ornament I gave her last year. I…had hoped to soften her, but…she must have corrupted it.
To be Continued this evening....
Happy Holidays Indeed..
Posted: December 18, 2014
“There might not be much for me to do this Mistmas,” Aurelius said to MeriKlaus, who strolled beside him. The underground paths of the Blizzard’s Realm were brightly lit by lanterns hanging from green vines that curled and twisted along the rock and dirt walls, though Aurelius seemed to have his own light.
They paused on a bridge that spanned one of many underground springs. Steam billowed up like warm clouds around the pair, and they enjoyed the warmth and the quiet.
“It is quite nice,” said MeriKlaus, “not having to worry about her.”
“Would you two MOVE?” An angry voice broke the tranquility and Aurelius and MeriKlaus jumped, confused, as Bernard pushed roughly past them, his shiny top hat pulled low over his eyes.
“What was that?” Aurelius wondered, but MeriKlaus looked just as baffled as he did. Since when did kindly Bernard, who doted on his beloved pals, start shouting at people? Especially during Mistmas!
“I don’t like this,” MeriKlaus said finally, “I wonder if anyone else is acting oddly?”
December Books
Posted: December 15, 2014
Looking at the calendar made Aibrean wince. Her books had been neglected for too long, and now she had a bit of a pile-up to deal with!
"That's the last time I travel so far for the holidays," Aibrean told herself with a sigh, "Boreal always holds things up!" She'd spent much too long hammering away at Volcan's volcano on her way home -- there were two new books she didn't even recognize at first -- but at least things were normal now. Hopefully nothing but a white and peaceful Mistmas awaited!
After organizing all the books, of course.
Wondering about Mistica's past, or looking for facts to determine what species of pet to adopt? Any book marked with (R) in the description has written content! Just read it to your pet and visit the library tower in Kingdom Village to reveal it.
Look to the Sky!
Posted: December 14, 2014
From Frost’s lofty perch in a snow-covered fir tree, he watched as the Mistican sky darkened. Lake Auberon was in view to the south and the huge, red-orange volcano of the Inferno Terrain dominated the north; newly thawed, it no longer glistened under the moon but turned a deep black as the sun set.
Then, the colors came, tendrils of pink and blue and yellow and green that washed over the heavens like some ocean in the sky. Frost had seen the burning white-hot comet growing larger and larger by the day since his awakening, and he wondered about this Aurelius. Where would he land?
His curiosity peaked, Frost stood on his tip-toes and the branch wavered underneath him. Smiling, he pushed off and took to the cold air, heading for the big volcano to the north. The Inferno Terrain was warmer than he liked, but Aurelius would probably land there to check that all was well after the thaw.
Frost landed to see a smiling Aurelius talking to Kyro. “I suppose Queen Boreal wasn’t powerful enough to throw much at us this year,” he said with satisfaction, “She underestimates Misticans every Mistmas, it seems.”
Kyro nodded. “Pandoria just gave us a boost and we thawed it easy!” He declared, munching on a Mistichile Pepper.
Frost blinked. Boreal? Now that was familiar, somehow...
Leaving the Misticans to their celebrations, he slipped away and let the winds carry him skyward again.
To Action!
Posted: December 12, 2014
Volcan’s volcano was a silvery blue monolith against a backdrop of red and orange. Pandoria squinted against the sun and firelight bouncing off the impossible ice, raising her gaze to the sky, which was a brighter shade of blue than she’d ever seen it without its usual screen of smoke.
As Pandoria watched, a Belragoth circled the volcano’s peak, landed, and let out a thundering roar. They were angry for Volcan’s imprisonment and screaming at Pandoria to thaw the volcano, but Boreal’s magic couldn’t be undone instantly. She had apparently regained her powers and thrown all of them into making sure her ice held.
The Belragoth spread its red wings and took off. Pandoria turned from the volcano but nearly lost her footing as the ground gave an angry rumble. It had been doing that more and more lately; pressure was building up beneath her feet with the volcano plugged.
“Those earthquakes are getting worse,” a male voice said suddenly.
Pandoria turned and saw Kyro, who kept a respectful (and slightly wary) distance. “Yes…the lava will find a way to the surface, whether through the volcano or the ground we’re standing on,” she said grimly, “The Inferno Terrain will turn into a lake of fire, and Volcan…” The goddess’s voice trailed off. He could withstand heat without issue, but the pressure from the inevitable explosion would be far too strong.
Kyro blinked. Clearly he hadn’t expected such dark news. “But, you’ll find a way to thaw it all out in time,” he said, though with a waver in his voice as though he wasn’t quite sure.
“Oh, I can weaken it,” Pandoria said, “and eventually it would unfreeze. But my efforts alone would be too slow.” She smiled suddenly. “Would you like to help, Kyro?”
The gourix looked over his shoulder as though his twin might be standing there. “Huh? Me? Well…how?”
“I mean everyone, of course. Let me show you."
Frost Revealed!
Posted: December 10, 2014
The Inferno Terrain was rife with the trembling of several indigenous rockroaches shivering in the crevices of the porous, frost covered walls. Frozen ash and tephra came down as snow and the echoes of angry roars flooded the landscape as the native belragothes found their homes had been snowed over.
Volcan pounded his fist against the thick layer of ice that sealed the volcano entrance, trapping him inside. He could hear scraping from the other side as several belragothes attempted in vain to dig him out.
“Darnit!” he shouted angrily at no one in particular. “I don't even understand how this is even possible!” He checked on the opening of a former gas vent and saw that that too was crusted over with ice, along with every other hole and crevice lining the volcanic walls. “No, not the sunroof too! This is dangerous! Someone had better get Pandoria!”
~~~~~~~~~~~

Meanwhile Meriklaus sat in wait, a frosty poof camouflaged with its snowy appearance giving her the signal that the trap was ready. They all hid amongst the snow-sprinkled bushes, watching, waiting for something to happen. Finally their plan yielded fruit when they heard a surprised holler and the sound of a trap snapping shut.

“Darn you Meriklaus, you tricked me!” a voice said amongst the sound of cheering poofs.

Meriklaus made herself known to the trickster, who sat trapped inside a magically imbued cage, the Mistmas gift they had used as bait in his hands. “Now what have we learned, Frost?” she asked.

“Stick to stealing gifts from the advent...” he replied. “Okay, you've got me. What now?”

“Why have you frozen the volcano? You've made the belragothes angry,” she asked in a calm voice.

Frost gave her a puzzled look. “Volcano? I don't know anything about that,” he replied in a genuine tone. “All I've done is hide presents. Maybe I gave a few kids a snow day or two. That's about it.”

Meriklaus cocked her head. “You didn't freeze the volcano?”

“Doesn't Volcan live there?” he inquired. “Even I'm not crazy enough to mess with that guy!”

“But then who...” Meriklaus paused in thoughtfulness. “Oh. I think I know who.” The only question remaining was why.

“So what are you going to do with me?” Frost asked.

Meriklaus considered him a moment. “If hiding presents and snow days is all you've really been doing, then I feel there's no real reason for me to detain you much longer.” The poofs surrounded the cage and used their Mistmas magic to undo the latches, freeing Frost from the cage's confines.

“Wow, thank you Meriklaus!” Frost said gratefully.

“Just don't get into anymore mischief. I don't want to have to come after you again,” Meriklaus said as he flew off. She sighed and thought about the situation. Of all the evil things she could do,
why would Boreal decide to freeze Volcan's volcano?

~~~~~~~~~~~
So that is the trickster that's been set loose in Mistica! And it looks like he's not alone! Let's welcome the Frost Ricket!
A Special Report!
Posted: December 8, 2014
Image
“This is Ken Kratork, bringing word from the Inferno Terrain,” the report blared through the television set. “Reports indicate a strange snowfall in the areas in and around the area. Such snowfall is incredibly rare and in the past has only been accomplished through powerful magic. There is no word yet on what may be causing these freak flurries, though much speculation abounds.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Hmm...” Blithe hummed to himself miserably as the report concluded and shut the TV off. He heard the door to his chambers open and shut, a short, stout arctic frodrinn in armor appearing by the door. “What news do you have for me today?” he asked the guard.

“Sire, we have heard word that the belragothes are on the move,” the frodrinn guard said with a graveness in his tone. “We don't know yet what's upsetting them, but they definitely seem angry.”

“Anything else?” the king asked.

“Yes. There are people reporting that they saw an icy silhouette circling the terrain before the snowstorm began. Do you think it could be...?”

“Yes,” Blithe sighed. “Send word out to Meriklaus. I'm certain my suspicions were correct. He's going to be trouble after all.”

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh no! It looks like the Inferno Terrain is SNOWED IN.
We can't even make it through the ice on the volcano to get to Volcan!
Who is doing this? What will we do now?
 We've had some word about our Hero Rats!
Misticpets sponsors the training and care of two Hero Rats, Pandoria is training to be a mine detection rat, and help clear fields in Africa and return them to use to the people. Aurelius is hard at work, training to detect Tuberculosis and aid in more prompt treatment for people affected.
(from the program)
Aurelius is now trying out APOPO’s new automated line cage! Its trainers are highly skilled and try to standardize its training as much as possible, but they are human, and so their timing is not perfect and sometimes they can make mistakes.  This is very possible when you’re talking about split seconds making the difference between good training and great training!
APOPO has developed an automated cage that standardizes training and the TB detection process. The automated cage is very similar to the 10-hole cage that Aurelius has been working in, but it has sensors in each of the holes that can sense whether or not its nose is in the hole. If its nose is in the hole above a TB-positive sample for more than 5 seconds, the cage automatically delivers a food pellet into an opening, the same spot where the food hole is situated in the line cage.
(To read a bit more, check out Mistic Chat, there is more information posted there!)
We hope you enjoy this for the winter, an exclusive gift for anyone that join our champion ranks this December.
Frosty indeed!
Mysterious!
Posted: December 3, 2014
Their feet thudded and echoed through the hallways and confused servants ducked out of the way. The guard led them to a great door at the very end of a hidden corridor.
“It came from just down there,” he said, pointing towards the door.
The door was frozen shut and required a powerful shove to break the ice that had formed in the crevice. As the door opened a powerful blast of icy air made King Blithe pull his cloak tighter around himself.
“Careful!” The king cautioned, his feet slipping lightly on an icy patch on the frozen stone stairs.
“Was it always like this?” MeriKlaus asked, the pair slowly descending. The ice became thicker the closer they got.
“Well it's always been on the chilly side, but not quite like this!” Blithe replied.
They finally made it to the bottom without any nasty slips or falls, despite all the icy patches. “Oh no,” MeriKlaus said of the frigid mess that awaited them.
Icy tendrils climbed the walls like fingers. Pieces of shattered ice lay on the floor. Upon further examination, the ice were chunks of a statue that had once been stone. It appeared to have been frozen and then broken apart.
“He escaped,” Blithe sighed. “I knew this day would come, but I had hoped to be there...”
MeriKlaus tossed aside the ice shard she was examining. “Where do you think he could have gone?” she asked.
“Who knows?” the good king replied. “I reckon we'll find out soon enough, however. We'll just have to keep an eye out for him.”
“I wonder if he's going to cause trouble,” MeriKlaus mused. “Knowing him, that's the first thing he'll do after being away for so long...”
Blithe and MeriKlaus took one last look at the frozen chamber before slowly making their way back up the way they came, minding the slowly thawing ice patches as they did so. No one noticed the shadowy figure slip out of view behind them...
Peace and Quiet?
Posted: December 2, 2014
An icy wind ruffled the furry hem of MeriKlaus’s cloak and she smiled. Cold as it was, the Blizzard’s Realm had never seemed hostile, with its soft mounds of snow that made the kingdom look like it was under a thick blanket. Even King Blithe’s castle, a silvery collection of turrets and towers and domes accented with bright red and gold, had a welcoming air.
MeriKlaus was waived in through the high golden gates by guards in Blithe’s livery and shown through the palace to the king’s throne room. All around green garland hung in loops and elaborately knotted red ribbons added their color to the castle walls. The king had wasted no time decorating for Mistmas, and it would only get more elaborate!
Two more guards bowed as MeriKlaus approached the throne room. She smiled and passed them, directing her gaze to the large inarbu sitting at the far end of the room, currently bent over papers a worker held before him. He looked up and grinned widely at the sight of the mericai. He rose and reclined somewhat gracelessly in his throne.Blithe
“Welcome, MeriKlaus!” His deep voice boomed and echoed off the walls, “Merry Mistmas!”
"And merry Mistmas to you,” MeriKlaus replied. “I simply came for a visit. Especially with how quiet things have been.”
“Ah, yes…well, I can look at this later,” King Blithe said and the worker bowed and trotted out of the throne room. The doors thudded shut behind him and Blithe sat back. “So…nothing at all?”
MeriKlaus shook her head and her smile brightened. “No, nothing. I know it’s early yet, but Boreal has been so quiet…I have hope this year,” she said, and a note of sadness now colored her musical voice, “Flintleaf nearly killed her, and I think she is still recovering. We’ll see.”
Blithe opened his mouth to agree, but was disturbed as a guard rushed in. “Sire, we heard a commotion in the lower storage rooms, but no one has the key to enter but you! Come quickly!”
Blithe and MeriKlaus shared a knowing look and quickly ran off with the guard, who was babbling about how very loud it was and that they felt a rumble even in the kitchens. They let him go loudly on, but both felt a stab of fear; maybe this Mistmas wouldn’t be so quiet after all…
