That evening, a confused Joel found himself walking the quiet halls of the palace. He passed tapestries that needed cleaning and decorative vases and statues covered in a fine coating of dust – obviously, this wing wasn’t often used. So why had Alana insisted on dinner here?
He’d never even been to the chamber she’d described. The prince found the empty echo of his boots on the stone floor a bit eerie, and wondered what on earth his wife had been thinking. This was Infestation, not Lanturnacht after all! Besides, wasn’t the big fancy dinner supposed to be his job to plan?
Well, if Alana could survive being kidnapped by imps she could handle Infestation. Joel finally found the room she had described, a small single wooden door with some simple carvings of flowers around the edges. The hinges squeaked as he entered.
“Joel!” A grinning Alana hopped up from her seat and ran to throw her arms around his neck. Joel smiled and presented a large red bouquet of roses; Alana blushed and set them carefully on the sill of the stained glass window. The fading sunlight glittered off the silky petals, and Joel wondered if this wasn’t the perfect place for a quiet dinner.
“Here, sit,” said Alana. She was all but bouncing with excitement, it seemed, and her smile was so wide she looked almost ready to burst into laughter. Joel obeyed and pulled up a chair at a small table set in the center of the room. There was only one small problem.
“Um…Alana, I can’t see you,” he said. And indeed a vase holding an enormous bouquet of pink and blue peonies sat right in between the couple.
Joel swore he heard the princess giggle. “Oh? I’m sorry. How odd.”
“Well…can we move them?” He hated to be critical, but he’d much rather see his wife than a bunch of flowers!
“Why? Aren’t they pretty? I mean, look at them,” Alana insisted.
Joel frowned. “Are you alright?”
“Oh, Joel!” Alana sighed, exasperated, “I put them there on purpose!”
The prince blinked, confused. And then his brain started to process the odd clues. Blue was a bit out of place during Infestation, so why had Alana chosen that color for half the centerpiece? Pink and blue…pink and blue…
Suddenly, it clicked, and he nearly fell off his chair. “Are you sure?” He choked out, sticking his hand through the flowers to see Alana’s face.
She nodded enthusiastically, bouncing in her chair. “Yes! We’ll have a fall baby! How wonderful is that?” The princess squealed.
There was silence for several seconds as Joel’s mouth worked but no words managed to make it out. Alana’s joy was starting to fade and her forehead wrinkled with concern.
Joel stood up with his wife eyeing him warily. Then he reached across the table and pulled her into the tightest embrace she’d ever felt.
“Yes, it is!” He said finally, and they dissolved into a mixture of relieved laughter and joyous tears.
