If you had asked a few days ago, Charitee would have told you that the absolute worst thing she could have imagined was the pets waking up in the morning to find a barren tree devoid of gifts. Today she found there was a worse fear yet realized when she discovered two empty beds while checking on the pets in the middle of the night.
They could only follow tiny footprints so far before they were covered by snowdrifts. Bernard had one comforting trunk on Charitee's shoulder and tried to calm her while the neighborhood was out searching. "Maybe they were taken in by a sprite. They'll probably be back by the time the snow lets up!" he told her, hoping against hope that his positive words would actually bring comfort to her.
"Look! Over there!" someone shouted. There was a sound of jingle bells, a grinding sound like something being dragged across the snow, and a snazzy jazz number about the joys of working in Meriklaus' workshop. "It's the snowbeast!"
"He's got the presents!" another said.
"Is that the children?" Bernard asked when he saw two tiny pets sitting in the front seat in front of a mound of gifts.
The snowbeast held his head high and proud as he dragged the sleigh towards the pound. More tiny pets poured out, cheering, as they ran towards Serena and Benson, arms extended and ready to produce gleeful hugs at the safe return of their missing friends. Charitee scooped them both up and nearly smothered them as she cried with thankful joy at their return.
She held them both out away from her face. "Where have you both been?" she demanded.
"We went to see Boreal!" Serena replied.
"And we brought her a flower!" Benson added.
"And she had a cold, so she thanked us for the flower..."
"And she apologized for sending the monster to ruin our Mistmas."
"But it turns out he's not a monster at all and he's really nice."
"And then Boreal gave us some singing snowflakes..."
Charitee soon interrupted them both when it became hard to keep up. "Slow down, one at a time!"
The snowbeast stood by the sleigh and looked around as everyone gathered around him with curiosity. His eyes lit up and his stubby little tail waggled when he saw the quartet of poofs hiding in the way back. He clearly remembered them just as well as they remembered him.
There were hushed whispers as everyone discussed the monster before them. "Didn't he attack the poofs and steal the gifts?" one said.
"But he brought them back," another pointed out. "Why would he bring them all back if he was bad?"
"He's not a bad monster!" Serena spoke up. "He's a good monster! He helped us find our way to Boreal and then took us both home!"
"I think he just wanted to be friends with the poofs and scared them by accident. He took care of all of our presents so they could come back and get them," Benson added.
"Is that true?" All of the whispering voices in the crowd hushed. They parted to make way for Mariklaus, who was tailed by her four poofs. "I came to collect my poofs and shyres and couldn't help but overhear...did you really take care of all of these gifts all this time?" The snowbeast whimpered and nodded. "That was very kind of you to do so."
"Where is he going to stay?" Serena asked.
"Can he stay here with us?" Benson added.
Charitee looked at the snowbeast in horror as she tried to picture how much food a snowbeast would eat and how much room he would take up. "I don't know if that's such a good idea..." she admitted.
"Why he can stay with us," Meriklaus offered. The snowbeast's ears perked up and he made a little sound of excitement at the offer. "We need someone to help pull the mail carts at the workshop, and they're just a little too heavy for the poofs to do it alone. Maybe you can come and help us?"
The snowbeast squealed with glee and hugged Meriklaus as the little poofs, no longer afraid of him, swarmed his feet and leaned in for a group poof hug. She realized that her feet were off the ground when she felt them touching the cold snow again as he placed her down.
"I think that's a yes," Benson laughed.
And so the pound got their pets back, Serena and Benson made it home in time for Mistmas, and the snowbeast finally had friends and a home. It truly was a magical Mistmas after all. Well, except for the one matter that still needed to be taken care of...
"You're taking the snowflakes with you too, right?" Charitee asked Meriklaus when they started getting a little obnoxious.
