Umbra was a witch skilled in both white and black magic. Ambitious and fearless, she was so powerful her magic actually sliced through the dimensions of the spirit and physical world. For a moment, Umbra stood as the bridge between life and death, but her mortal body couldn't take it. She was burned up.
When Fowler came to fetch her spirit, Umbra refused to come. Her magic was attached to her spirit and not her physical body, so she was able to ward him off until he agreed to take her to a meeting with death himself to discuss her fate.
Elian was highly intrigued by the witch's extraordinary gifts. She was too dangerous to leave as a spirit and didn't have any body to go back to, so Umbra was sent to the Vaulted Courts as a ward (prisoner) of Queen Aster until Elian could decide what to do with her.
