Through the Looking Glass:
Thedes:
plumage is slightly grayer than most
his ribbons a faded blue
hawk-like eyes
studious, spiritual, but not religious
lives at the top of the Library in Kingdom Village
on-looker, introverted, never on the inside
has a Faust-like mindset, wishes to know all worldly knowledge
the more he knows, the less happy he becomes
turns to seek out other times of wisdoms
Thedes is a small Gurahdi, compared to his fellow fowl. He stands a head shorter than average. His snowy plumage has an ashy gray tint to it, and his ribbons, the pride and joy of every Wintergala pet, are faded and show signs of becoming thread-bare. However, his eyes remain a piercing blue, watching all in their wake. They scour the lands, watching over Kingdom Village. He spends his days in the Library's tower, reading each of its articles several times over. When he has exhausted all sources, he will start anew. This has lead him to become well versed in all knowledge that Mistica has to offer. However, he very rarely does his own research, outside observing the residences of the village, for he is often afraid to leave his tower. As a result, Thedes has little contact without the outside world, opting to bury himself in his studies. Still, this has left him alone for most of his life, forcing him to bury deeper into his studies.
After a while, however, Thedes has become bored of snapping up every little factoid that this world has to offer. He has begun to seek out more than the known world has to offer. He has turned to studying religions and spiritual beliefs, in attempt to fill the void of emptiness.
Description: A WinterGala Gurahdi with a slight build, Thedes typically stands a head shorter than his fellow fowl. As a result, he is often mistaken for being younger than he actually is. His wintery plumage contains fine streaks of ashy gray, making him appear more statue-like, if he chooses to remain completely still. His blue ribbons are faded and show signs of tattering at the edges. Though, by no means does he appear unkempt as Thedes prides himself in his clean-cut appearance. His eyes are a piercing ice blue that give off the air of knowing all. Thus, many find it nearly impossible to lie to him. He can also be seen holding a book or scroll at all times.
Personality: Thedes spends most of his day in Kingdom Village's library, where he pours over all the works it has to offer. He has, thus, become well versed in all known knowledge of Mistica. However, it has also left him lonely and withdrawn. As he learns more about this world, the less happy he becomes. To combat this, he spends his time watching over the citizens of the village and observing their daily lives. It brings him some satisfaction, but never can he truly escape the feelings of being without companionship. Thedes, as a result, has become rather spiritual. While, he does not consider himself religious, he has taken up studying every aspect of religion, taking and borrowing pieces of ideology and morals that appeal to him, and crafting them towards his own set of beliefs. By doing such, he hopes that one day, he can find the happiness that is missing from his soul.
Strengths: Thedes has an aptitude for retaining information. Not only does he maintain a photographic memory, but he also audiographic. This becomes his main strength, but it is also his biggest weakness when he hears or see something that brings him discomfort. Otherwise, it is something he is very proud of, and he will often cite it when correcting another individual. Another one of Thedes' strengths is that he is very observant and has an impeccable time reading people. This means, if he would give himself the chance, he would have little issue making friends. He is also a very caring person, if he would let himself be.
Weaknesses: On the flip side, Thedes often shies away from human contact. He has a tendency to self-sabotage, and will willing insult and slight others just to make himself appear unlikeable. Then, late at night, he will agonise over what he said. He, however, holds that true knowledge is true happiness - something he stubbornly clings to and refuses to budge from. This results in a coping mechanism of burying himself deeper into his readings, insisting one day he will find it. He is also very factual, taking things, such as idioms and memes, quite literally. And he often gets upset when others do not hold knowledge in the same regard.
Biography: Thedes knew very little about the his family background, for he has no familial ties. His mother, father, and any siblings he has are lost forever to him. He does not even know, if he was abandoned or separated from his family. Therefore, at a young age, he was taken in by the citizens of Kingdom Village and cared for. However, he soon became forgotten about due to his quiet nature and aptitude for knowledge. And he spent much of his childhood and young adult life locked in the Library's Tower, with only the occasional companionship of Lissa, supplying him with new books.
Thedes, however, did not feel that he was lacking in anything of substance. He enjoyed getting lost in books and rarely felt the need to go outside and experience life. He was content to view it happening from the outside - to be an observer. But soon he discovered that the more books he read, the more unhappy he became. His need for knowledge could no longer be sated as the well of endless books dried up. Eventually, he had read every book in Mistica several times over!
Thus, Thedes spiralled into a depressive state. He did not know what to do with himself, so he spent hours on end searching for it in Kingdom Village. In his tower, he observed its residents and their daily lives, hoping to receive a hint to finding happiness. But it was all in vain. He found no pleasure in this.
Eventually, Thedes decided to look outside the city walls for answers, and soon discovered that what he sought was not worldly. As a result, Thedes developed a deep spiritual knowledge as he poured over texts he once thought as nothing more than fiction. Now, Thedes reads any and every religious work he can get his talons on, and strives to learn all this world has to offer, regardless of it is tangible or not. But still, he continues to search for that one elusive gem - true happiness.
Short Story:
"Hmm… Buying cupcakes, again?" A thin WinterGala Gurahdi observed a baby Vix from his perch a lit Kingdom Village’s highest tower. "That is the third time this week."
To many outsiders, he would have looked misplaced, a wintery bird in the warm climate of the castle town. Even with his dull downey coloring that gave him the appearance of being made in stone, he could not shield himself from odd looks he received. However, to its inhabitants, he was known as the town observer. He knew all, they said. And would often come to him for advice, or to win the occasional bet.
"You should consider being a part of things for a change, Thedes," A Normal Phelocan piped up, as he landed next to a pile of papers the Gurahdi had been scribbling on. The Phelocan then proceeded to haphazardly throw a bag labeled mail to his patron. A few of the envelopes swirled out and floated to the ground.
"And you should consider being more careful, Maury," Thedes responded in the same tone, as he watched the letters fall. "Those may have been writing to loved ones." Now they would never fulfill their purpose, he added to himself.
"Oh don’t worry. They will find their way. They always do." Maury waved a blue wing unconcerning. Thedes' papers felt it and threatened to take off themselves before the white fowl could scramble and collect them. He nearly sent himself off the tower to protect his cargo. But Maury hardly seemed to notice and continued on.
"I once 'misplaced' a letter between Princess Alana and Joel. He was confessing his love to her in it too! But look at how that turned out! They are married, aren’t they?â€"
"You know, that might not be something you wish to brag about," Thedes replied dryly, organizing his papers so that the carrier pigeon would not lose his articles.
"Why's that?"
Thedes let out a long sigh, "You know what? Nevermind. Forget I said anything." Fielding the Phelocan's puzzled looks, Thedes proceeded to dig in the bag for his package - a nicely wrapped book from Lissa. It was a new release that had yet to be announced. Thedes smiled as he opened it.
"That Lissa," Maury chirped, retrieving his pack from Thedes, "She is a kind soul."
"She sure is," Thedes agreed, though he was far more fixated on the book. It was like nothing he had seen before. "Tell her thanks for me, will ya?"
"Oh sure!" Maury agreed, before taking flight. As usual packages of all sorts spilled out of his mailbag. And as usual,. Maury didn’t seen to notice as he continued along his delivery route. Thedes was always amazed when his package survived the flight But they always did. That was a miracle.
---
"Oh no! This won’t do!" Thedes cried out. Maury had left hours ago, and the Gurahdi now sat in the candlelight, pouring over his newest addition. However, something was off about this book. It was terrible! What had Lissa been thinking sending it to him?
The cover in question was plain, with an unusual tan binding and no title to be seen. The text was in small light font. It was a humble book, overall. Even its content was unextraordinary.
With a final huff, he threw it against the wall, and crossed his arms. "How is this any different than all the other books out there on the subject?" He exclaimed. "To think Lissa would let this be published!" His rant, however, fell short at the chiming of bells, off in the distance.
He sighed as his keen ears picked up the singing that soon accompanied it. It was nearly Ostara and Pandoria's Birthday. The Kingdom Village was preparing to celebrate their Goddess' special day.
Normally, Thedes scorned at the preparations that went into it as much as he scoffed at the Anyai's worship of Rae. It was pointless, he had decided long ago, to praise the goddesses, who very rarely showed their faces. However, this time, he decided to see what the commotion was about.
Thedes left his stoop and began to wander the streets of the town. He was not accustomed to the layout of it from the ground, so often he searched around for the familiar structure of home. Otherwise, he blindly followed the music to a small chapel.
There, he sat in the audience, surrounded by more people than he ever had been, as the choir gave their rehearsal. In awe he sat through out it. The chorus sung with such vigor and life, he could feel filling up every hollow bone of his. By the time, it had drawn to its end, a warm sensation had covered the young Gurahdi from head to talon.
“Your singers did an excellent job,†Thedes praised when it was his turn to speak to the director. Normally, he would not have offered his gratitude, but the music had complied him to. “How did they learn to sing so well.â€
The director, an Ahbruis, smiled knowingly to that, “It is all thanks to our Goddess, Pandoria. She fills our hearts with gladness, and for that we sing as best we can for her.â€
“You mean she has enchanted your voices?†Thedes asked in disbelief.
“In a way, yes.†The Ahbruis laughed, “Though, she did not use her magic to do it. Now if you'll excuse me, there are others waiting.â€
That night, Thedes laid awake pondering what the Ahbruis had to say. How was it possible for Pandoria to give someone the power to sing from their soul without a single spell. It was ludicrous! Still… Those voices had all sounded so happy singing out praise to her.
How could they be so beautiful? How could those voices give off such clear emotions? Was this what it was like to speak from the soul? Thedes wondered to himself. Either way, he concluded, he would find it.
