Relationships
Yomi - Current student, ward and drinking buddy. Yomi takes care of the household while Shamal brings in the money. Unfortunately, Shamal often has to drag Yomi out of street fights, as the brat has a penchant for sticking his nose where it doesn't belong and rising up to help those that need it at the most inopportune times. Later on, Yomi becomes his magical equal, love interest and enemy.
Story
"Once, I was known by many names. Kid. Brat. Useless. Careless. Rash. And then I won that cursed Tournament, and I became known by different names. Immortal. Phoenix. Fire Wizard. Mage. Demon. But now? Now I'm just Shamal. That's all I've ever wanted to be."
The mentor of Yomi. Once a boy with dreams that slowly became a tired man, Shamal has spent a majority of his life existing off the map. He doesn't want to live in cities or exist with the crowds, but rather to disappear entirely. He's lived his lifetime - several lifetimes in fact - knows what he wanted to know, saw what he wanted to see, and has traveled the world enough to know where everything is by heart.
And now he just wants to rest. But Fate won't allow him that. Fate dumped an orphan brat onto the street where he'd been busking, and out of some twisted attempt to redeem himself and perhaps finally find solace, Shamal took him in. Now Yomi is competing in the same tournament he once survived, trying to find "the King", and Shamal is helpless to do anything but watch as his boy throws himself away all for a bit of power and the chance to kill the man who supposedly took his parents away.
Shamal's power is over fire. With his fortitude and mental strength, he is able to conjure great beasts and fortresses with it. His enemies rarely give him a chance to hide behind his conjured walls, simply because he blasts them to cinders before they can do anything more than scream.
Despite his power, Shamal rarely uses it. He finds it tiring, and more importantly he can't use that power without people identifying him as "King" and wanting to get a piece of him. So Shamal holds back on using his powers of fire unless there's a dire threat to either himself or Yomi, and even then he's entirely selective on the process, as Yomi has a tendency to zap anything that he doesn't like, and he doesn't like quite a few things.
