During his final mission, his canine partner was killed in action. His tour was over and he went home. He did sustain injuries.
At home he mostly sticks to himself until his brother introduced him to a dog that didn't make the cut for police work. A dog his brother raised and trained. He was reluctant to met the canine but the two ended up with an inseparable bond.
