Remiel is the guardian and custodian of the Rivers into Tartarus. Those who are deemed to dangerous to be sent back to Earth are instead sentenced to an eternity in the belly of Tartarus, the sentient, eternal jail. Remiel plays the role of the executioner, being the vessel through which Tartarus exacts his punishments.
Remiel takes from each soul who comes through a facet of their previous life as "payment" for taking them to Tartarus. This is usually something they valued greatly, such as intelligence or beauty.
