The Story So Far
Venera smiled as her dragon companion slept; she nestled into the crook of his right front leg where the heat of the afternoon sun was not so intense. Razeth opened one eye as he spotted his friend so blissfully content. Letting out a yawn, he closed his eye and dozed off once again. A half an hour passed by before they were both jolted awake by a large explosion. Venera peeked around Razeths body to see a young man covered in soot, coughing.
Razeth rolled his eyes and muttered something that she could not understand. Meanwhile the boy was sitting on the ground talking about too much dragon fire in the mix. Venera wondered who he was because she had never seen him in the valley before. She crawled up onto Razeths head, peering over into his eyes all the while grasping tightly to his horns.
'Who is that boy? I never saw him in the valley before.' Razeth looked up; Veneras eyes were staring into his. He took a second glance at the boy who now was lying on his back, staring at the sky. His hair was white like smoke and he wore a simple light brown vest, white shirt and black pants. His shoes were gone and like Venera, were going barefoot. The one thing that seemed rather unusual was the color of his skin, which was pale, the color of ivory.
'From his appearance, he looks to be a child of the Northern Plains.' He yawned. Lifting his head, causing Venera to slide until she was sitting on Razeths back. 'He must be studying with the white dragons.'
She slid off until her feet hit the ground. She ran to the front to face Razeth, who was himself, getting up. He unfurled his massive wings. Venera laughed as they caused a burst of air to blow in her direction; flapping them a few times, he once again folded them back against his body.
'I thought white dragons do not come this far south. Do they not prefer colder climates?' Venera asked.
'Yes but seeing as some of the most potent medicinal herbs and flowers are native only to this part of the realm, they often send their students here to gain more knowledge and he probably is here to train with the Kolara dragon clan.'
'I never saw a white dragon before.' She began to look around, hoping to catch a glimpse of one. Razeth laughed, his deep voice echoing throughout the valley.
'Sorry my pet but you will not see one. They barely come this far south.'
Venera frowned, her nose scrunched up making Razeth laugh again.
'They let their students travel alone?'
'No pet, they have soldiers accompany them.'
'Oh, I see.' Venera looked again at the boy who by this time was now watching them. She smiled, waving at the boy who waved back before making his way towards them. As he got closer, he soon realized that Razeth was larger than he thought and a look of fear came over him, Venera saw this and smiled.
'He may be large but he is not as mean as he looks.'
He smiled sheepishly and came closer, shaking the girl ’ s hand. He noticed she was the complete opposite of him in looks. Her hair was the color of fire, which was tied back in a black ribbon. Her skin was an olive color and her frame was slender, muscular. She had on a black dress yet the hem had intricate spiral designs that wove in and around white flowers. However it was her eyes that were a deep green that seemed to have captured him and they seemed to have stolen his ability to speak.
'My name is Crain.' He blurted out. 'I am currently studying with the Kolara Dragons.'
Venera smiled as she introduced herself. 'I am Venera and I am studying with Razeth and his clan.'
'What are you studying?' I myself am studying healing techniques.'
'I am studying a little bit of everything but I am especially good at Dark Magic, you know, necromancer stuff.'
All the color drained from Crains face, as he suddenly knew what species of dragon Razeth was and Venera could see that she said something that she should not have.
Razeth was a Morte or Death Dragon and were often known for their ferocious reputation and although over the years their acts of kindness and loyalty were seen, old superstitions still lingered.
Razeth saw the fear in the young mans eyes; he crouched down and looked him straight in the eyes.
'Fear not, boy, I am not as evil as you think. Leave old thinking behind.'
Crain gave a small smile and Venera knew it would take a bit more time before he felt comfortable around her friend.
'Razeth raised me after my family was killed during the last war,' she explained as she looked up at the large dragon.
Morte dragons were the largest of the nine species of dragons found throughout the realm. His body was a dark green with patches of a lighter hue while his underbelly was a greenish yellow shade. His wings were a deep aqua blue and gave him surprising agility while flying. It is well known that Death dragons are well acknowledged as some of the best flyers. His eyes were the traditional red with black irises and the large horns on either side of his head were an obsidian tone.
His breath was what his species was known for, toxic and lethal to all who inhale its pungent fumes. Their breath causes completed organ failure within minutes and also results in internal bleeding. People have been known to actually bleed through their skin as they die when coming in contact with a Death dragon’ s flame. Known for their tempers and fierce protection of their young. Both the male and female take on the nurturing of the young. The males though, have been known to form a stronger bond with the young and often take the role as caregiver to abandon or orphaned juveniles.
Razeth looked at both of them; Crain was eyeing him with a sense of uneasiness while Venera was smiling that trademark grin of hers.
'It is just that I have never encountered a Death Dragon before. I have heard of them from my teachers but only know what I have been told.' Crain exclaimed shifting his gaze between both Venera and Razeth who now was looking intently at him.
Razeth began to laugh much to the confusion of Crain.
'Very well young one, I shall answer any and all questions you have about my clan.'Razeth exclaimed.
'That would be great.' Crain smiled, his fear of the large dragon was diminishing and he was finally beginning to relax.
'Now then, since that is settled, how about we all grab something to eat.' Razeth said, looking at both of them.
Venera smiled as she climbed onto Razeths back. She held out her hand to Crain who hesitated before grabbing hold and with her help, climbed behind her on Razeth’ s back.
