WORKING
Welcome to the Tower of Babel. An incredible megastructure that's the embodiment of human ingenuity. It was meant to be a fresh start - to be the beginnings of a new world. A phoenix rising from the ashes of the scorched waste Earth had become. Only one of hundreds of towers built to sustain life after the Earth no longer could. They are completely self-contained and self-sufficient, and continuously expanding upwards.
Then, there is The Pit - the strangled jungle of rebar, steel beams, and concrete beneath the Tower of Babel. There live the Freedivers - vagrants and thrillseekers looking for danger. They navigate the base of the tower, making their homes in the crumbling ruins of the vacated floors. Some live as freedivers for the money, because the various ruling parties of the upper strata pay handsomely for people to navigate and repair the tower's foundations. Others live as freedivers simply for the thrill. Various companies have sprung up around the freediving profession, from scavengers who salvage usable materials from the surface to reputable construction firms.
Lain Marasy, codename: Quark, Female, 19, 5'0", 102lbs, is a rookie in the Quanta Freediving Association. Pit born and raised, she grew up on the wires. Her real parents are unknown, but she was raised by Quanta's founder and leader, Barett Marasy, who claims he found her as a child, abandoned in some corner of the Pit. When pressed, however, he becomes incredibly evasive about her origins, which leads people to believe that there's more to her childhood than he lets on. Lain, however, is unconcerned. Happy with the life she ended up in, she could care less about trivialities like her real parents. As far as she cares, she has over a dozen rough, gruff, and very doting parents.
Quanta is a small Freediving organization that focuses on salvaging materials. Made up of only 19 people, it's a tight-knit little family. Their headquarters are located in the lowest habitable zone of The Pit, and they're one of the few organizations that explore the surface of the Old World.
Lain is the baby of Quanta. She insists that the others not treat her like a child, but she not-so-secretly loves the attention from the other members. She's friendly and pragmatic and boasts an incredibly crass sense of humor (with a pottymouth to match), but she's capable of turning it down a notch or two if she has to. Although she grew up on the wires, learning how to safely maneuver up and down the metal framework of the tower under the careful supervision of her father, she isn't allowed to freedive with the others in Quanta until she turns 20 and passes the Freediver's Safety and Proficiency exam. She eagerly awaits the day when she is old enough to go to the surface with the rest of the crew.
