QUOTE
"Imagine, for a moment, the life of a cancer patient. Lying in bed. Waiting to die. To be rid of it's incurable plague as it ravages the body and drains the mind.
Now imagine, in that same moment the irony, when the true disease is not the cancer itself, but rather, the one in question. Such is nature's plague, when the creatures meant to sow the seeds of greatness and wonder reap it just as quickly in the hopes of instant gratification.
They leech on one another, then wonder where God is when they are in trouble and sick. They later come to boast that God is always with them and justified in all his actions when things begin to go their way again.
But it was said once that darkness cannot beget light, and in every heart, I find darkness. Even the souls of innocent children are corrupted by man's inheritance.
So I ask you, then, how would you set out to find the cure for cancer.
Well, there are some who don't.
And then again, there are some who believe the answer will come to them given time...
...but I am a creature of action, my friend. I am patient, but I dare not remain idle. I do not wait for answers, no. I wait for opportunity, and when the time comes, trust and believe, I will take it by the horns and make humanity bend its knee. Mind you, this feat will be done not of strength or mere force of will.
You see, I have faith that one will, in fact, reap what they sow, and the seed of man is that of destruction and Death, whose image I emulate, and upon it's will I act."
ABOUT
Nailo was conceived as a twin sister to Ama Faervel. Considered younger of the two, since she was born last, she suffers from weak immune system and possesses little physical prowess because the elder sibling became semi-parasitic in the womb, leeching essential nutrients from the other. This also resulted in a shorter height, fragile build, and a lack of skin pigment (where she may have been born with an olive complexion, she came with gray/ blonde hair became platinum/ green eyes became silver). Otherwise, the two were identical, and raised equally by their mother (a Huntress by trade), who taught Nailo how to use a bow when she could, and father (a well read but quirky Wizard and Guildsman) who filled her imagination with stories of excitement and adventure. Nailo was almost always ill in her youth, but when she wasn't, she was outside playing "Heroes VS Villains" or "Pirate Ship," in which she demanded to always be captain. She liked being the leader of the two. While she inherited her mother's adventurous nature and love of animals as well as her father's love of stories and research, Ama was more shy and reclusive, preferring to follow and steal bits of Nailo's 'treasure' while she wasn't looking. She was always very protective over Nailo, however; a model older sister despite being nearly identical twins.
However, her childhood came to an abrupt end at eleven years old, when her father came home one day from a guild quest after investigating ancient ruins. He returned very troubled and quickly isolated himself. She would learn much later that he discovered a tome describing various forms of necromancy, which was considered to be immoral and forbidden among society. The tome would have been destroyed, but his views on knowledge as being more precious than any gem moved him to protect the book, knowing that while the guild would more than likely try him if they discovered it, the closed mindedness of people would prove far more dangerous.
Whispers of his discovery spread to the nearby town, and while some reported to the guild, others began to form a mob, and acted quickly. They stormed the house inn the woodlands, slaughtering her mother and father before her eyes. In her despair, she drew her little bow and shakily cast her very first spell; Conjure Barrage. Dozens of arrows spread from one, killing everyone in the room, but the magic took its toll for such a high level spell compared to an inexperienced child, and she passed out, leaving only Ama in her room.
When she awoke, she found herself hidden in the family cellar, and the voices of law enforcers could be heard beyond it. Peering out, she saw Ama with Nailo's bow, telling the authorities that she murdered them all in self defense, turning herself in. As she was escorted out the door, unaware of Nailo's existence, she would soon realize that her sister would be imprisoned for over a decade for murder, tainted by her father's name.
She lived in the woods for the remainder of her days preceding their reunision. She learned to hunt, and lived in the abandoned house for many years. She seems to have hallucinations during that time, of a black stag with a long tail and dead branched antlers, who she called Fel at the time. She would draw it around dead birds in a forest, and claimed it would speak to her, teaching her to be strong and survive illness by taking life to prolong it.
She never speaks of it now, claiming it was an imaginary friend, but is prevalent in much of her artwork and symbols.
Eventually, anyone who came to her forest would mysteriously disappear without a trace, and was given the title of Death's Archer. She learned by observing daily life in occasion to act happy and innocent, gaining their mannerisms, but whet at first she was treated poorly for her association with the rogue wizard, she was treated with fear and caution. Often accompanied by an animal of some kind, be it hyena, giant owl, fox or stag, she appeared in civilization only when she required information, and left just as quickly. It was only upon Ama's release that Nailo would begin human contact, but her hatred for humans and her view of then as monstrosities changed Nailo's heart, even where Ama remained caring and kind.
Through adventuring, Nailo gained favor in the guild and became world renowned for her skills. She has aided many a creature In her adventures out of what soars at first glance to be the kindness of her heart, leading her to gain special abilities, such as the manipulation of ice and water, as well as allowing her access to useful spells which enhance her skills In melee combat. In the ruins she plundered, she found many forbidden techniques for manipulating life and death, eventually learning to use soul stones to trap and utilize the souls of those she kills, and used unique magic items to enchant various equipment for flight, elemental manipulation, and even unnatural senses.
She currently wields three weapons;
The first is Irithyll, the Longbow of Sharpness. Able to rely on dexterity rather than strength to use it to its fullest potential, she uses arrows infused with Necrotic or Cold elements to strike her opponents with unnatural speed and accuracy. Infused with the essence of a Behir she encountered and forged with refined Invisibility Dust, this bow is lightly covered in blue-silver scales, granting her limited invisibility and an advantage against various monstrosities while armed with it. Surprisingly, she can also adjust its size to fit in her pocket so that it can be easily hidden from view.
Her second and favored weapon of choice is her scythe: Elaine, the Dreaded Soul Reaver. While originally obtained as an enhanced weapon for redeeming a doomed city from the face of an incurable plague, her adventures lead her to obtain special items with which to reinforce it further. A peculiar shard of Aelydium (specialized and ancient ores used to enhance weaponry and armor) granted the scythe with chaotic abilities, allowing it to become a devastating weapon in the right hands. Upon reforging, she infused it with the remains of a misshapen child whose bones carried a blessing within them, and a special growth she called "Death's Pitch," for its disturbing effects when exposed to any form of heat, draining warmth from all it touches. Experimenting with these materials allowed the legendary blacksmith to endow the weapon with unique traits. The scythe became lightweight, and more easily handled for one of Nailo's size and strength. Anyone who was struck with the blade became weak to the cold. In addition, the scythe became possessed by the spirit of the child, whose name was originally Elaine. She has the ability to protect and aid Nailo in battle for a limited time, but only when she asks, and may manifest herself when she deems appropriate. Redesigned to resemble a skeletal crow, it's blade is inscribed with the weapons name in Sylvan, and intricate designs lace every inch of the ten foot handle, including a striking image of the same stag from her memories, making it a sacred symbol and divine focus through which she can channel her cleric abilities.
Lastly, there is Mordrim, the Blood Sabre. A dark rapier of epic proportions, black aura trails behind it, and it darkens her eyes, nails and hair when wielded. It, too, can scale itself down to dagger size, and then up to that of a greatsword with no need for strength to utilize properly. A strike from this blade makes one physically vulnerable for a time, rending the soul, and immediately tying said spirit to a material gem on Nailo's possession. One can hear quiet whispers begging for the souls of the living when wielding it, and it grants her not only magical prowess, but the ability to glimpse into the afterlife for a few seconds at a time, though she is limited with this ability.
Where many viewed her as a hero, she would never forsake her one true goal; to end all of humanity, including herself.
Viewing Ama as dangerous due to her attachment to her, she claimed she got 'too close' when she tried to show Nailo that love and the good in humanity could outweigh the evil. Nailo- pretending to care for Ama's safety- convinced her to perform a ritual which would allow her to escape death until she was ready to pass on, after learning of a hidden truth about the afterlife. Instead of escaping death, however, she was consumed by it, tapping her soul in a gem she keeps with her still. She will not absorb it due to the risk of Ama becoming part of her, but rather uses her soul to inhabit bodies on occasion, fully under her control while retaining her personality. When not possessing a corpse for Nailo's purposes, the stone is removed, and hidden from others so that no one can free her, or use her soul fur their own reasons.
She wanders the world now, waiting for the opportunity to end humanity's existence once and for all.
STORY
A barren wasteland lay before you as a dust-covered expanse illuminated by the light of a silver moon. Silhouettes of skeletal trees stand lifeless against starry skies, while large stones dot the landscape, rimed in ice. The ground beneath you feels polar, even through the soles of your shoes, yet to touch it would leave you admiring it even through the cold, as it reminds those who dare to reach out for it of fine silk, much unlike any dirt or sand.
Walking forward, the trees thicken, and you can almost hear the ghost of rustling leaves. You should feel afraid, but it's oddly peaceful here. Almost tranquil, rather than quiet.
But then you begin to see the bones. Human bones scattered across the path through which you trod. Various fragments, such as vertebrae, teeth, and even entire skulls could be seen along the ground. The stones, too, began to become more coherent shapes. Some were simple squares jutting up from the ground, while others were more intricate, like crosses from small platforms. It was becoming more and more apparent; this was a cemetery.
As you keep wandering about this surreal nightmare, you notice the debris begin to show scarce signs of overgrowth. The bones would be covered in a sort of glistening moss, and the trees you noticed before began to show longer limbs that hung low, bending towards the earth while adorned with leaves signature to Weeping Willows, or even began to twist in on itself like Juniper, adorned with foliage like thorns.
Eventually, the trees and rock and moss-covered bone led to a very large clearing, consisting mostly of an impressive lake with water so still, it looked to be made of mercury. Not even the gentle caress of frostbitten wind seemed to move is waters, looking more like a mirage than an act of nature's will.
Looking into the water, you see no reflection, but as you reach out to its surface, you see-- behind where you might have been-- a black stag with horns like the terrible branches of an ancient and barren oak towering over you.
As you turn around, however, you are met with a far different sight.
A young girl, hooded by a strange blue and silver cloak, hovered in the air just a few feet above the ground, its design reminding one vaguely of the anatomy of a manta ray, as the broach that held it closed confirmed its likeness. You could see platinum locks stray from her concealment in strands, but her face remained hidden by large round goggles and a silken sash which remained wrapped around the lower half of her features. She seemed to wear strange leather armor which shined in the night, barely revealing any skin. From what it failed to hide, you could tell her skin lacked pigment, even in the darkness.
What was most predominant of all these things, however, was a massive metal scythe, with a design akin to that of a skeletal bird whose wing became the blade, and whose ribcage guarded a brilliantly glowing stone. It exuded a powerful, dark aura that alluded to its unpredictable nature, and it even seemed to vacuum the heat from its presence, adding to the winter chill. Engravings were etched into the metal in a strange language you couldn't understand, but you didn't even get a chance to attempt to before a soft, high pitched voice broke the silence while the rather delicate figure tilted its head in curiosity.
"Why have you come here?"
The wind seemed to pick up slightly at her query, but only for a moment. The only sign of movement came from the fog of each of your breaths, and her cloak waving ominously behind her.
A slight shift in her features could be made out behind her clothing.
A smile?
"Ah... Forgive me. You must be cold. No human has managed to wander here, before. Not even Kaida..."
She proceeded to remove her sash and wrap it around you to warm yourself, revealing her face. Having gratefully wrapped it around your shoulders to protect your quaking body from the biting winds, you take a moment to gaze upon her. Her features were sharp and delicate, like glass, and you could, if you were keen enough, catch a glimpse of her eyes, which were as piercing as starlight even through her tinted eyewear.
An unprecedented warm smile spread smoothly across her youthful face as she seemed to observe you for a moment.
"Then again, this place is relatively new..." She scratched the back of her head as she gestured around you. "Still making it home."
Her voice seemed to put you at ease, her demeanor offsetting in such a seemingly passive yet hostile environment, but soon your feet begin to feel numb, and you notice the strange moss that appeared to blanket the area in small patches had begun to visibly spread over where you were standing, robbing you of any sensation you might have had without any inclination of stopping.
"Beautiful, isn't it? I call it Death's Pitch"
It continued to spread, reaching your calf. You couldn't move. You frantically try to pull it off, but it quickly begins to spread over your palms and fingers where they touched.
"It's a very unique and deadly specimen... I've been studying it for quite some time, but there is nothing like watching it run rampant, so I allow It to grow and fester within my domain. It thrives off of heat, growing rapidly towards whatever source it can find, robbing the warmth of life from wherever it touches."
She says this almost gleefully as her eyes glittered in amusement. Pulling out a gemstone and chanting over it in a hushed tone as you could feel a weight in your chest, almost anchoring you down. Though your vision was hazy at this point from the shock, you could see the stone begin to glow faintly.
"Go ahead, try and keep warm...! That sash will only last you so long."
Crumpling to the ground, you look at her with wide, painful eyes. She was tormenting you. Feigning hospitality when she was just stalling for time to seal your fate and watch you die. If only you knew...
"Why, you ask...? Ah... a human could never hope to understand, but I suppose on your deathbed, I could enlighten you."
Her eyes gleamed, and her smile wickedly upturned.
"You see... Pitch isn't the only specimen I study. I have observed your kind for years. Humans... They take without remorse, they destroy and feed off of everything around them, like parasites. I myself am unfortunate enough to lead an accursed life as such a human, but at the very least, I know I'm a monster."
She giggled in delight as she continued to drift closer, making sure to take in every detail, knowing your limbs were useless now. She spoke matter of factly, as if this was entirely textbook.
"The most common, wretched filth to plague this earth... a cancer, if you will. And you... You have the gaul to taint my sanctuary? Well..."
She removed the sash from you with ease before the fatal growth could touch it. As she wrapped herself in it once more, she held out the stone so you could clearly see the fire within the Black Opal begin to stir brilliantly, "... at least you can serve me with some purpose. Your very soul will meld into mine and gift me with even more power as you continue to sing your song of woe and sin into oblivion. And your body? Well, I could always use another vessel for my research. After all, the manipulation of life force is never an easy skill to master, you know."
The edges of your vision began to darken as shady, emaciated figures begin to manifest just out of your peripheral.
"I wonder what hell is like... If it burns with fire like in biblical lore, or maybe your world becomes as acrid as this one, like in Dante. Regardless, do me a favor, would you, and send your inner demons my regards, because where you are headed, there is no afterlife."
