Long ago, Lantern used to be a demon residing in hell itself. There, he played the role of soul retriever; it was his job to hunt, capture and bring souls into hell, even if they were destined for better places. However, after too long, he got tired of this job, finding no satisfaction in it, nor retribution. He began to have a change of heart. Hearing about other demons 'changing their wings' so to speak, he decided he would do the same, wanting to find out if the grass really was greener on the other side.
So, he began to return and rescue souls from hell, secretly transporting them out of the dammed place and helping them reach higher destinations. Though, it wasn't long before the other demons began to catch on. Now, for demons, being caught committing a virtue were to be punished in the utmost manner. So, he did what any one would do in his situation; he ran. Though, pursued by many a demons, he almost didn't escape, getting his head severed just before he released his soul in a breath. This breath carried his soul out of hell and to the closest source he found. This happened to be a unlit lantern, hanging outside a farmer's barn.
Curiosity got the better of the farmer, after all, a lantern that hadn't been lit for years was suddenly burning bright with a golden flame. After investigating the lantern, the farmer heard a voice come from it. After a short discussion, and a bit of lying on Lantern's part, the farmer gave him the body of his recently deceased dog to possess, allowing Lantern to use it so he could live. Grateful to the farmer, Lantern aided him in the removal of ghouls that had been attacking his farm. Though, after too long, the demons who had wanted him dead found out where he was hiding, putting Lantern on the run, trying to find a way to restore his body back to it's previous state; at the moment only able to take on the canine form.
After getting into contact with some angels who had seen and heard about his virtue, he was granted the ability to transform back into his previous form; under one condition- he was to continue his job of soul fetching, but instead, bringing the good souls back out of hell and returning them to heaven. Lantern accepted the task, along with his new name of 'Lantern'. Though, he has many trouble ahead that seek to get in his way, a converted demon soul being of high-market value to some people who know how to use it. Never the less, he is attempting to complete this task to help regain full ability over his form and perhaps finally be able to rest, not as a demon, but as a free soul, unbound to right or wrong.
