"Khiren? Are you awake?" The young voice of his apprentice pierced through his work-induced haze, and Khiren reluctantly tore his gaze from the item in front of him to answer Sena's call.
"Yes, I'm down here. What do you want?"
"It's nearly six, are you getting hungry at all?" Soft footfalls on the stone steps told the master mage that the boy was descending to check and see how he was. He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Such soft, foolish behavior. Even after all these years, it irritated him to no end that he hadn't been able to shake that out of the boy. Of course if he'd shaken the boy any harder he would have splintered his mind, but still...
"Master?" When Sena's voice came right next to his elbow suddenly, Khiren jerked, whirling around in a fit of ire.
"Gods curse you boy, what have I told you about sneaking up on me like that? I could have knocked your head off!" Khiren snarled, eyes blazing with anger. Sena quickly stepped back upon seeing his hand move, fearing a blow that would never come - Khiren didn't hit his apprentices, no matter how stupid they were.
After a few moments of tense silence, Sena's head bowed in silent apology and he began to head back upstairs, clearly to start breakfast without him. Khiren watched the small back retreat, and couldn't help the savage feeling of hatred that welled up inside of him.
In the nine years since Sena's permanent removal from his world, and Khiren's forced adoption of him at Iron Gate, the two had held a semi-harmonious relationship. Sena, forced out of his comfort zone, tried to contend with what was expected of him. Likewise, Khiren was forced to remind himself that Sena was a stranger to his world, and that he had to explain everything to the boy like he was a child.
Sometimes he succeeded, but more often than not his temper reared its head and instead of explaining things, he would flat-out ignore the boy or leave him to struggle along on his own in hopes he would figure things out by himself. Of course, in the event that Sena stumbled into danger (which was usually five or six times an outing) Khiren would wait until the last moment to save him, hoping against some misbegotten odds that the boy would somehow manage to save himself. When that failed, he saved the boy, scolded him thoroughly, and they went on to the next rinse-and-repeat.
Yet for all their downsides, their relationship did have its good points. Sena seemed to know when Khiren needed someone to rant to (not at) and was willing to listen and offer advice concerning people and their view of things. Khiren found himself oddly out of anger when that happened, and was more inclined to listen than argue. Likewise there were times when Sena simply couldn't take anymore, when his true, deep down fears or self-loathing reared its ugly head, and Khiren had to step in before he tried to hurt himself, or worse, someone else. During those times their interactions were not forced or tense, and things one another said actually went through.
Still, their relationship was far too imbalanced for it to be healthy, and Khiren knew it. But what could he do? The boy hadn't been able to go back to his world, and he had no where else to stay. Whether he liked it or not, Khiren had to take care of Sena, and Sena likewise had to deal with Khiren and all of his attitude problems.
