Khan is a tsukomogami, that is, an inanimate object that has gained sentience from age. While he was once a beloved plush toy passed down from parent to child for many generations, years of abuse left him battered and worn until his most recent owner determined him too ratty and old for further use and he was carelessly tossed aside by the very people that had once loved and cared for him. With nowhere else to go, he wanders from place to place, hoping desperately to find someone with the compassion to take in a beaten up old ragdoll like him and continue the tradition of passing him down.
After years of fruitless searching, he has become bitter and cynical and has grown a biting resentment towards his former family, seeking to one day track them down and gain revenge for his abandonment. His only comfort comes from reading the many books he comes across in his search for acceptance, particularly encyclopedias and books about philosophy.
