In ash and soot walked the man of the born millennium. Embers crawled through his veins and smoke trailed behind him like a wind.
In the shadow of the clock tower's eye, he bellowed a soft and sorrowful call.
Those who felt it in their marrows came, many unknowing and confused.
It was their time, as it was his time. Gathered on the cobblestones, surrounded by vagrants and dreamers and lovers, he fell to the fires within him.
And in an hour's time they were reborn in the ashes he had left behind.

"You have been marked by the changing wind. Come and find me, at your own peril, and you might bear witness to the unveiling of your true destiny."

Hermes; "messenger of the gods; Mercury"

"The Harbinger"
Wherever Hermes goes, he brings with him the wind of change. He is a walking catalyst, a trigger of peculiar events. He is like a pebble that falls and causes an avalanche. Whoever or whatever he interacts with will experience a great change, within themselves or with their circumstances of existence.
He is known by a small few who devote their lives to finding him. They offer him worship, though he does not need or ask of it, and have developed rituals in all manners in an attempt to contact him. A significant portion of his followers believe him to be a god, though he is not, and treat him as a savoir, when in truth not all that he causes to change are changes for the better.
Hermes himself has a soft spot for those that worship him, though he offers them no special service. Sometimes he will call to the heart's of those that seek change to meet at a peculiar place. It is always up to those that he calls to decide whether or not to come. Not all or even most of those that end up coming are actually his worshipers, or have even ever heard of him. The call may be so much as a simple impulse to take a different path today than one normally does, or it might be as a grand as a vision. To each person the call is different.
His only belief is that to truly be alive, one must always allow themselves to change. One must never believe that they are done experiencing, or they might just find that the world has moved on, changed, and left them behind. He does not give any weight to life or death, any change is preferable to staticity.
Hermes is a very powerful wielder of the finer, subtler, slight-of-hand type of magics. Yet his true element lies in flames, and as it is he always carries with him smoke and ash and fire. He is a ghoulish sight to behold as he looks rather intimidating. And he is certainly not one to trifle with, for in all of his benevolence lies a great ferocity, one that is sparked quite easily. When challenged, confronted, or crossed, he will show you just what he is made of.
He is crafty, cunning, and voracious. The universe lies just behind his eyelids, and behind his grin lie the voices of all within.

Where do winds fall
Between the mountain's pass
Through the rocks and rivers
Of the dreaming wilderness?
I shy from sleep's grip
So that the dreamer may always have a watcher
To whisk away nightmares
And log the time as it falls in between worlds.
And when the world wakes I will be there,
To gather the winds
Rolling off the mountainside.

In a great and ancient northern grove stood a grand and gnarled cedar. Its branches spread and sheltered the land. It was the heart of that forest; its roots spread so far and deep that it connected one end of the forest to the other. Its bark was life-giving, its leaves could sing. Dwelling in the shade cast by its branches granted one prosperity and luck.
In the deepest parts of the night it bid its creatures to sleep long and well. It offered peace to any who offered the forest kindness.
And it drove away terror and evil, for its twisted, gnarled trunk bore in it a great benevolence, one that caused distress to those full of ill-intent.
On one fateful dawn a heavy storm rolled in. The wind blew so fiercely that the branches of the trees whipped at each other. But because the great cedar remained, no tree was uprooted and no living creature harmed by the onslaught of the sky.
But as great as the cedar was, it could not prevent what happened next. The sky cracked and split, and from its depths a terrible lightning bolt struck in the woods, and, by chance, hit the cedar, splitting its very trunk in two.
In the wicked, pelting storm lit an unnatural fire, for the magic of the tree prevented the rain from putting it out. It spread over all of which the cedar had protected, sparing no sapling nor mouse.
In the wake of the storm, all that laid behind was ash.
Deep in the blackened wasteland stood the cedar, white, bare, dead.
The split in its trunk was draped in shadow, and from the chasm rose something... odd.
And thus, Hermes was born.
