Let me reveal an ancient tale, one of truth, deceit, trust, and betrayal; of gods, deities, and demons. I would believe it to be nothing more than a myth myself, if it were not the last sight these eyes witnessed.

It was a time where mortals believed in many gods, where every act of creation was believed to be performed by an otherworldly being. From the sun crossing the sky, to the flooding of the Nile, each deity had their assigned task. If believed in enough, these beings became truth, and formed into existence. They weren't without conflict, just as mortals they had their weaknesses and disputes. Yet, what effect would beings of creation have on the world they watched over if they were to oppose each other?

Qamra was our goddess of regeneration. She was who defined what souls would be reborn, and what ones would stay in the underworld. She personified regeneration and was the key to existence, who helped keep the cycle of life intact. Some believed she symbolized the moon, being at the peak of life when full, and dwindling down into death when new, yet always circling around to repeat the cycle. This waning version of the moon was only visible during the morning hours, which she even greeted each dawn of a new day, welcoming the return of the sun and revival of morning. Her people were so dedicated to their belief in her task, that they made her part of their language. They created a hieroglyph in her image, a hare above a ripple of water, which to them defined 'to exist'.

She had a kind demeanor, yet led her people with an iron fist. The souls of the dead went through many tests until they were deemed worthy enough to be reborn, and it was her who had their final say. Though they had their heart weighed upon death, and had gone through the gates' stages, Qamra was still sought to, to deem them worthy of being cast off or returned to the mortal world. Those who had a pure heart were sent to the afterlife, in waiting for this gift of regeneration, others with the weight of guilt in their hearts were cast off into the underworld for the punishment of their sins for eternity.

Deep in the pit of the underworld's mechanics resided Liron, our god of judgement and punishment. Whereas Qamra decided who would be reborn or cast off, Liron had the duties of what punishment deemed fit for a sinner. Whether it be keeping a glutton's food just out of reach, or being set ablaze and in pain for eternity, he had the will and creativity to set individual punishment. Among the most common punishments were the removal of their senses. Living up to the name of the devil's darning needle, he used the threads of their own lives to stitch up their eyes, mouths, and ears depending on the crime committed.

How one like him could grow weary of this task is uncertain, but he began to falter in his duties after my brother Hit, and I were condemned in unison. I myself was innocent, but my brother had convinced Liron otherwise, sparing himself and placing the blame upon me. Even knowing I was the innocent one, my eyes were stitched closed and I was sent off, my brother becoming a loyal follower to him in his personal debt. After noting he could get away with wrongly condemning sinners and doing so for some time, our goddess of truth noticed and intervened. She took away those threads of life, and cast him from his work. Little did we all know that he had quite a love story going on behind our backs, one that was taboo in our time, being with a mortal.

He had promised this mortal that he would ignore her life's sins, if she were to take her life and join him in the underworld, but without being at his post, a tragic end came to that love story. Once she had taken her life, she was rightfully judged and sent off to her eternal punishment, by none other than myself and Qamra. Our goddess of regeneration had given me a second chance once listening to my tale, thus I became the guardian of the gates at her side. Though I was blind, it was fitting, for I would not judge based upon looks, but instead upon the depth of one's soul. Soon after his lover had failed the test in the gates and her soul was banished, Liron appeared before us, cursing the very rules we followed. He deemed these laws unjust, and that one shouldn't be punished for a crime they were forced to commit. We explained to him that the crimes she committed during her time aren't what made her heart heavy and impure, but the choice she made of refusing her greatest gift, her life. Enraged, he lashed out at myself in Qamra's presence, tearing those threads from my eyes, allowing me one last vision of his wrath before finally taking my eyes completely. He could not take on Qamra himself at the time, leaving in a bloodthirsty rage.

Over a course of time, he gained more followers, even gaining the loyalty of the sun god, promising them the creation of a new world, one without rules, one without order, a world he was convinced wouldn't fall into chaos. To create this world, he needed the powers of life, existence, and time. Each of his followers were sent to take care of these deities, assigning Qamra's life to take care of himself. One by one each of our goddesses fell, an all out war raging between good and evil on the surface, with many caught in between, until Qamra was the last one left on the side of good. Devastated with the destruction, she sacrificed her own life as a final fail safe, guaranteeing the eventual revival of everyone involved no matter what side they chose, as well as taking that one last key Liron needed in making his world.

This war continued despite her absence, each side being on the verge of chaos, until the goddess of truth returned once more to quell the fighting, ordering a truce between each side, hoping to give enough time between each side for Qamra's sacrifice to revive everyone involved. Some obeyed the truce, agreeing that there was no reason to continue without Qamra and continue to strive for a new world without law. Others were still fueled with rage and wanting revenge. The final act to dissipate them wasn't done on purpose, but out of grief. Rook, our deity of rain, had lost his sister, the goddess of life in this war, and refused to bring the annual rains in his depression. The people of the land were forced to live in famine or leave, and the gods who were left forced to return to their posts.

Very few of us good were left, though I was told to stay at my post at the gates the entire time. Qamra had informed me that she needed me, just in case her plans didn't go their intended way. I was to be her vessel, the one to keep her soul within me if she had to sacrifice herself. To this day she still resides in me, waiting to be awoken in a new body when the time is needed, for Liron still wanders this earth, looking for revenge, looking for a way to return his lover, and still aiming for the creation of his own world. Who knows if or when he would start another war? Whenever that may be, I will hold onto Qamra and keep her soul protected.
