Beyond the Blood

The sun is all I know in this deserted wasteland. I have come to learn her patterns, her moods - each sunrise is unique, distinct. Some days, when the sun is tired, she keeps her colors for herself and provides only the gray light to welcome another day in the series without end. I do not blame her for this. I understand the weariness of eternity. I understand that she sometimes needs those colors herself, to give her strength to face another dawn.
And some days, she looks down upon me and I know that she feels sympathy. Those days, she throws her own health aside and pours her colors out in such splendor that I worry she will burn out and all for the sake of me. But she rises still, and further she raises my spirits. She understands that I need her glory to live - mine is long worn out.
Upon this bare grassland we made our stand. I led young men, the brightest of the age, to their deaths. I saw the earth stained by their blood - I saw the earth darken, shamed to know that elsewhere, tears too would leave their mark. Ashamed to know that all this would vanish too soon, like the men who had laughed and loved, raised families and raised communities.
Upon this cursed plain we fought an enemy who bore our face. They shared our terror. They shared our sorrow. And now, their bones share our resting place; their blood mixed with mine to nourish the flowers that have become our tribute.
I have seen my tombstone, and it caused me more pain than any of these bleak dawns. For the glory I won was won through murder. It was won through the slaughtering of men with whom my only quarrel was the words on a piece of paper. It was won though the sacrifice of innocents, my brave young soldiers who I led here to their doom. It was won with so much blood, and so many tears.
No, in life I won no glory at all. But the sunset is always so much more brilliant than the pale sunrise. In my death, before I am at peace, I shall live up to the words on my grave. This is my pledge. This is my purpose. This is what binds me to this world, where I lived and where in battle I fell.
