Emcee was raised in a thriving, bustling town, full of people, entertainment, tourism, you name it. Everyone there seemed to know each other, and most couldn't walk to work without stopping for a conversation. Though it had it's downfalls and crimes like every other town, overall the place was friendly, cheerful, and perfect. A little too perfect.
Though I can't know for sure how things worked out for us
To keep this town alive and well, the people there believed someone was to be chosen at birth to become a sacrifce, to whomever they looked to, to keep their town safe. This ritual was likely frowned upon in other areas, but every member in the town seemed to agree and believe in it. Emcee was chosen for this ritual, and was to be sacrificed on her twentieth birthday. She was told this story by her parents from the very beginning. She knew she would be sacrificed, and she was fine with it. From what she understood, the town would fall into a state of disrepair, and those living there would lose their lives. Why no one moved away from this place, she didn't understand, but if it meant her sacrificing her life, over many dying and her being selfish, she didn't mind her duty.
No matter how hard it gets you have to realize
Being raised knowing she was meant to die at a set time made her highly charitable. She'd even give the clothing off her back if necessary. She did travel outside of the town too, seeing the rest of the world, helping out others. But one year before the inevitable sacrifice, she met the love of her life. Now, all this time she had been able to give up any posession, but he was a different story. No matter how much she wanted to try, she couldn't leave his side, nor could she tell him the truth about her life. She could never admit to him that she loved him, in fear of becoming attached, even if she clearly was already.
We weren't put on this earth to suffer, and cry
With her birthdate getting closer, she grew more depressed, until she finally broke down and told her lover that she was to be sacrificed. Oh how she wanted to stay, to tell him it was just a joke, but it wasn't, and she couldn't. Simply watching him disappear after their 'breakup' left her just as broken as the teacup that had shattered on the ground from him. He didn't even seem stable when he left, as if he didn't believe her. She left soon after, back to her hometown. Nothing had changed, the town still thrived, and people even recognized her and greeted her when she returned. For the first time, she had actually regretted being a sacrifice, and that nagging feeling told her to just ignore the town, and go back to the life she had established.
We were made for being happy, so be happy
The day came, and everyone was gathered in the town square, as if it were some kind of festival. A festival for them maybe, but not for her. Did she really have to sacrifice herself in front of everyone for their protection..? They had chosen a humane way, lethal injection, but before any action could be taken on her, a familiar voice called from the crowd. Was it her lover? Whoever it was, caused enough of a fuss to stall the event in his favor, making his way through the crowd with another familiar person. They were friends of her lover, and she had met them before, but why were they here?
For me...
"You're not meant to die." The person called out to her. She of course didn't believe it, feeling drained of life and any meaning it held at the moment. "I know it's far fetched, but I'm your brother, from a separate dimension. I've seen this happen in my world, and you're not meant to die." A brother? She never had any siblings, what kind of lie was this? Her focus on this liar took her mind off of the rest of the town, that literally had paused in time. No one moved, no one breathed, a stray balloon had even held it's position in the air. Was it all a nightmare? The two had come to her rescue whether she asked for it or not, attempting to take her from the festival. However, she fought back against them, pushing and shoving at the one who claimed to be her brother. It broke his concentration, causing time to unpause. This interruption finally let the town show what it really was. Plants started to decay, and the area started to peel away it's vibrant color, as if it were hiding this vision all along. People collapsed to the ground, others became distorted monsters and shadows, groaning to the one who chose to keep her life.
For you...
What Emcee didn't know, is that this is how the town was all along. These people never existed, her parents were probably never there, yet she didn't seem to turn into one of these beings. In a way, she had escaped this alternate reality. With her 'brother's help, and his accomplice defending them, they were able to leave the now literal ghost town for good. But.. what happened to those people? Was her entire childhood a lie? Could she fix the insanity that her lover had fallen into, even though he had completely forgotten her? So many questions were left unanswered, leaving her to finally wonder, maybe she really wasn't meant to live.
Please...
