Life for me had been, well, perfect. It was simple then, and I was once simple minded, content with doing as I was told. The only thrill I had was escaping my home late at night to explore the cobblestone streets and closing shops. I lived with my dear, aging mother, hellbent on having me wedded before the next year. I, however, was not so eager to do so, often times devising plans to make my suitors unpleased with the woman they had heard so much about. This was my life.
On one blessed evening I found myself clambering out of my window onto the balcony, lifting my heavy skirts and contorting them to make sure they would not be damaged. I had blown out my candle by then, surrounded by the welcoming moonlight and cool air. I had then climbed down the lattice--albeit quite clumsily--and wandered down the rough street towards the town, letting the cool night air grace my cheeks and neck. It was a beautiful sensation I savored every night.
Eventually I reached the city, the lamps flickering into a steady glow. I was unaware of what time it was then, making my way to the candy shoppe I so admired. My boots ("Unfit for such a lady," my mother would often say) made soft thuds as I approached the lit windows, my hands clutching the folds of my dress as to not stumble upon it. I reached the window and took in the scent of caramel, freshly made and set to cool. It was then a voice came from nearly nowhere. "Lovely smell, isn't it?"
I turned to find a man, not much older than myself, gazing through the very same window. "Oh, yes," I responded, smiling gracefully, as my mother had taught me. "I come here every night."
"As I have seen," the man replied, gracing me with a warm smile in return. "I've always liked this candy shoppe. I've quite the fond memories of my youth here."
I nodded, returning my vision to the decadent pleasures inside. "Mother has never let me buy anything from in here," I said, "She always told me they would spoil my teeth."
To this my new friend laughed--a beautiful, hearty laugh. "My dear, you've been missing out, then. The truffles are quite honestly my favorite, though I never had acquired the money to spend on such little things until recently. My father was a poor man, you see, and I was but a child."
"I would love to try some," I beamed, pressing my finger to the glass. "What are those, precisely?" The objects I was referring to were swirled candies on sticks, tinted with every imaginable color.
"I would be glad to spend a penny on you if you'd like," the man returned, "And those are lollipops. I assume you've seen many a child with those on the streets."
I looked at him, surprised. "Sir, we've hardly just met, and you have offered to pay for something I wish to have. I cannot accept that."
"Do not be silly, I insist. Life must have it's simple pleasures, you see."
Simple pleasures. I had believed I had those--reading by candlelight, the warmth of a fire. The man laughed at my stunned expression. "My name is Kenton, miss. Excuse me for not introducing myself earlier." He added a small bow. "Now, what would you like? We must hurry, for the shoppe closes soon."
I looked at my choices, too grateful to offer much of a response. "My name is Sienna," I replied, unsure of what else to say, "And I thank you for the offer."
This was the first of many nights to come in which I would meet with Kenton, each night becoming more of an excitement, the man becoming very much of a friend.
A year or so later, I was surprised to find him on my doorstep with a bouquet of flowers, asking for my hand in marriage. I accepted, breaking the vow I had made myself to never give in.
It was a mistake.

Retaliate says "A cat running into a member of it's own kind is less than strange you know. Your 'investigation' is more of an interrogation and I don't take kindly to it." The man's voice turned slightly more stern. Obviously he didn't take kindly to strangers, vampire or not.
|
Retaliate says "I'm not quite certain why you're so interested in asking me so many questions, but if you really must know I am a Colonel. " The man replied, placing the mysterious book in an inner coat pocket before turning his attention back to the rather curious stranger.
|
Retaliate says "My, you're full of questions. My authorization come from my rank, to answer one of your questions." The man motioned to the decorated uniform he was wearing. " That is a reason I cannot tell you. "
|
Retaliate says "A little bit of both, actually. Although I don't see any problem in that. " He paused, his neutral expression remained unchanged. "I told you, the book is not meant for unauthorized personnel, therefor, yes, you could call it a secret book."
|
Retaliate says "Does a book need a title to be a book? A title does not define the contents found within the pages. " With those words he closed the book, keeping it's contents hidden from the brown-eyed stranger. "Curiosity I suppose. However, this book isn't for public eyes."
