Born in a small village in Guangzhou
And I take care of myself.

It was a murky day in the woods. I was gathering berries and leaves to feed my mother and the animals. The trees shuddered, and I lied down on a soft patch of moss. Gazing up at the sky, I noticed something very strange. There was smoke. I did not recognize this as factory exhaust. Slowly, I began to realize that the trees were falling into flames. I ran back to the village as fast as I could.

Day by day, the war got worse. My mother became addicted to the Opium brought by British traders ever since my father died two years ago. I worried for her. She lies on the bamboo mat all day, unable to move.

I rubbed my eyes open and was alarmed. The house was engulfed in flames. I choked on ashes and ran to my mother's room. It was too late to save her. Panicking, I leaped over waves of bright yellow and red fire.

Ever since, I've been hunting in the woods. I don't trust anybody but myself.

One day, I shot a goat with my arrow. It was so small and fragile, its bones peeking through the tangled tufts of fur, that it wouldn't make a decent meal. I took pity on it and decided to keep it to sell and trade the offspring.

I named the goat Lan because that's the sound she makes at night. Secretly, I traded her kids to British merchants, despite how much I hate them.

When carelessly trading with a merchant, I was caught. Men with large metal devices that made deafening sounds when fired took me to an unsanitary cell.
