Backstory: Lorenzo was born into a family of lesser nobles of the city Atrianna, however due to their general down to earth attitude they were mostly nobles in name only with hardly any power more than commoners. Lorenzo spent his childhood in company of his siblings and a few of the local mer children. They were mostly raised in the same manner although Lorenzo and his siblings did get higher education. Quite early on he exhibited an interest in water magic, specifically in its healing abilities, thus he started tuition to become a water wizard.
While life was good for the most part, there was one thing that has been weighing on his family for a long time. Generations ago one of his ancestors angered a wizard who then cursed Lorenzo's family. The story of what exactly happened is unclear, as pretty much every relative has their own version, ranging from a lovers' spat to an elaborate prank, yet the results are all the same. At any random time, anyone from Lorenzo's family could turn into a fluffy mammalian creature. During that state they're mentally hardly more than a common animal, yet the real issue was that while trapped in that form they lacked the ability to breathe underwater and thus were in danger of drowning. That is why no one from the family wanders off on their own, as they would always need someone nearby to help in case they turned.
Many have tried to find a way to break the curse, but only a few dared to venture to the mainland, some never to be seen again. One day Lorenzo decided that he didn't want the rest of his family to be restricted and endangered by this curse any longer. Thus he made the decision to risk going to the mainland, in hopes to finally find something to break his family's curse, and return to the ocean alive.
Notes:
- He's been six months on the mainland before joining up with the group.
- He's gotten close to a tiefling named Gelion and the two now consider each other brothers. Although they had a bumpy start due to Gelion's crippling fear of humans and Lorenzo posing as one.
- He pretends to be a human while on the mainland due to the danger its inhabitants pose to the merpeople. But with enough trust he might reveal his true identity to his friends.
- He's the group's medic and has a bit of a mother hen attitude towards all of them, making sure everyone's alright and healthy.
- He's the most aristocratic out of his whole family as he took a shine to the noble idea quite early on, however he's still quite chill most of the time and doesn't demand people treat him according to any status.
- Takes way too long to get ready in the morning. Just the hair needs about half an hour.
- He is incredibly homesick already, missing both the sea and his family dearly. The mainland is a very different place and he's not used to being alone. Traveling with the group helps a bit but it doesn't substitute the feeling of being around his kin. Especially since he still needs to hide his true identity.
- The seashell necklace he wears is his arcane focus and was a gift from his mother he received after completing beginner level magic tuition. He cherishes it a lot and tends to subconsciously reach for it when thinking about his family. As every family member took part in creating it.
- When talking about his parents he calls them mother and father, but when addressing them directly he switches to mom and dad.
- He likes to play around with his water magic, one of his favorite tricks is to shape water into a huge school of fish and have them float about. He's so proficient in it that the fish's movements are very realistic.
- He's got a fantastic singing voice while underwater, but since sound works differently on air his singing while on the mainland is rather horrid. That lead to a very embarrassing situation once and he's sworn to restore his dignity by learning how to properly sing on land.
- He is incredibly embarrassed about his cursed form, thinking it's hideous and worthless. That's why it's hard for him to talk about it cause he'll instinctively deny it ever happened. Even if everyone's clearly seen it.
- The cursed form is some sort of rodent, is about the size of a guinea pig, and makes squeaky noises.
- By nature Lorenzo is an incredibly sweet and even innocent individual, but in specific dangerous situations he's learned to flip his personality upside down. Depending on whether he needs to intimidate or charm someone he can either become very cold and dominating or sly and seductive. It is something a lot of the merfolk learn as a self defense tactic in case they ever get captured by fishers. He hates deceiving others like that though and is terribly afraid that his non-merfolk friends won't understand and will think he's really just this cold and deceitful creature.
- He would likely be 271 and claim 225, but merfolk only get to about 100 years of age in this campaign, so I chose the next best thing. :P
