The Mortal Angel
For the soul is free in endless skies.
Few men have avoided suffering from some part of the hardships that plague our mortal world. Fewer men still have avoided even witnessing these trials. But though so many of us are aware of the great adversity forced upon us from the moment of our birth, it seems that most are content to endure or to watch, but never to interfere.
Have we grown so shy that we regard any challenge as unchangeable fate?
I cannot accept this passive outlook - for I have seen hardship, but I have also seen hope. I have also seen change. How much worse were our troubles only a few centuries ago, when plague stole the lives of the strongest youths? And now, that same plague is virtually nonexistent except in name, a tale no longer relevant to our times. But it is extremely relevant, for it shows the solution. The worst trial of an earlier day was solved through the advancement of science and knowledge, through the efforts of brave and thoughtful men.
So I will not sit back and merely admire these great men; I will strive to become one of them and to be counted amongst their ranks. I will destroy another part of that hardship that oppresses us, so that the following generations may eventually break it down completely.
I will see my Marilyn smile before it is too late.
