Pet Profile
In the back room of Addie's Hats, a small green creature furiously tore at a sunhat, rending fabric and lace and sending feathers flying. At first, one would of course assume the trips was tearing the unfortunate article of clothing to shreds, but upon closer inspection it became apparent that the tiny beast was actually making the hat more beautiful.
At the sound of a bell the trips looked up, confused. He trotted to the front of the shop, fearful at the possibility of a customer, but instead saw a plump, tan koko he knew quite well. She was wearing some excessively flouncey gown and had far too much makeup smeared over her face, far more than he would have ever allowed had she still been his apprentice, wide blue eyes vacant as usual. Balanced on a mess of curly brown locks sat a jumble of feathers and ribbon. One of her earlier works, no doubt. He could barely look at the thing without retching.
The koko spotted him and gathered him up, cradling him against her chest as she crooned "Hello Fifi!"
The trips protested, "Cut that out Adeline! You've known my name for years and for the last time you I'm not your pet! Further more," he continued as the koko placed him on the store's register, "I was just in the back attempting to restore some kind of order to your latest 'creation'. You really need to-"
"Uh-huh, but listen F- Cecil," the girl interrupted, "I was just at lunch, well, you know I was just at lunch, but listen, you remember Penelope right?"
He remembered Penelope. Penelope had been afraid of him and forbade him to enter her home. He'd been tied to a lamppost in the middle of December while his childish 'owner' attended a party in the wretched girl's house.
"Well, I just saw Penelope, and you know we had a nice chat and all, but that's not what I'm talking about. She just ordered two hats! One for each of her nieces...of which I assume she has two. Anyway, I got the measurements and all, I just hafta...they're here somewhere..."
She rummaged around in the folds of her dress. Adding pockets had been a stroke of genius, Cecil could admit that, but the girl herself could rarely find what she left in those pockets. She wasn't quite normal, he mused. At nearly twenty-two she could still be mistaken for a rambunctious school girl, and seemed to insist on designing hats despite her lack of ability. A loony dream chaser, perhaps.
"Yuh! Here they are!" She held up a folded sheet of paper triumphantly. "So she requested something elegant for them. Some big shindig or something. Anyway, I was thinking we could-"
"Could you, for once, just leave this up to me?" The trips interrupted, "You always take charge and I always end up with more work fixing whatever monstrosity you make than I would have if I had simply started from scratch." He placed his tiny paws on his hips, staring her down.
"Wuh...well how do you expect me to get any better if you don't let me make my own mistakes?" She stuck her abhorrently red lower lip out as she spoke, pouting.
Cecil could have gone into the hundreds of reasons why she had no hope, why she was better off quitting the whole business and looking for another job with less thought and creativity involved, but he didn't. He never did. Since his transformation into a trips that fateful day months back, he had rarely been able to stand up to his apprentice. She was the only one who knew what happened to the famed milliner, and the only one who knew why the highbrow store Cecil's had become Addie's Hats, or why Adeline had suddenly become so 'good' at millinery shortly after his disappearance. And she was the one who had to take care of him now.
He sighed, remembering this, "Alright Addie, we'll give it another shot. Hand me the paper."
She had, perhaps, an addled mind, but possessed a good heart all the same. He could live with that.
Mmmm. This'll be up until I can come up with an appropriate profile for dear Addie.
