Top Ten Defensive Weapons

Last month I covered ten of Mistica's most deadly and dangerous weapons. Some of these had sheer power, while others took a certain toll or put conditions on the wielder, but all deserved their spot on the list for their fatality. But what worth is a good weapon if you leave yourself defenseless? Here is a list of ten of Mistica's most effective defenders, in no particular order.

1. Her Cloak
Our dear goddess Pandoria has infused this cloak with her very own magic. The cloak is enchanted to make a shield around its wearer, and what could possibly penetrate the spell work of the great goddess herself? Not to mention the cloak itself hides your face, and if your opponent can't see your eyes, you have an advantage.

2. Dragonslayer Shield
It's bright and flashy, but highly effective! Almost nothing can get past this shield's tough exterior and it covers a very large area, giving you plenty of protection. The only drawback is its weight, as being large and sturdy makes it heavy, so you have to be strong to be able to use it properly.

3. Her Shield
Another defense item blessed by Pandoria, this shield is another good choice for the battlefield. It's slightly smaller than the Dragonslayer and offers almost as much protection with the added benefit of it being extremely light. Pandoria wouldn't create something clunky and weighty, after all! Perfect for speedy fighters.

4. Lion-Hearted Shield
Only for the true and brave of heart, of course! This shield is not to be used by any with malicious intentions, as it is imbued with the courage, bravery and loyalty of the lion's spirit, and will not take kindly to a shady user. While it's less effective than the shields mentioned above, it is extremely formidable when paired with the Lion-Hearted Sword; together, almost nothing can get near you or avoid your blows.

5. Rainbow Shield
Your masculine pets may cower and snarl in a dark corner at the very sight of this bright, many-colored shield, but there is no doubt that it's highly useful in battle. It will protect you from almost any blow, and has the advantage of being small and light as well. Its most distinct feature, however, is the magic within it; the colors are not just for show, after all; any opponent with a darkened heart who even looks upon this shield will shrink away! Thus, you not only have the measure of your enemy, but a chance to strike.

6. Peridot
It seems fairly silly to believe that a small green gem would give you any advantage in battle, except perhaps distracting a very greedy opponent. However, this assumption is quite wrong! The peridot offers as much protection as some shields because of the pure luck within it. You will find yourself striking at precisely the right moments while your foe constantly misses, for example, and it is a huge advantage.

7. Shield of Darkness
While it is one of the weakest shields mentioned here, the Shield of Darkness is not to be underestimated. Enter the arena with a weak countenance and the dark magic imbued in this shield will take over your heart, and you will fall! It is the best friend of thieves and mercenaries, as they move in the dark and the shadows, using fear and manipulation as weapons.

8. Shield of Tears
This is one of the most formidable shields I've come across. Not only does it have a very high rate of effectiveness, it is also a weapon -- not a particularly powerful one, but a weapon nonetheless. This is also a very unique shield; it was not only created with magic and metal, but by the very spirits of fallen fighters, their tears of pain and loss fueling the shield's strength.

9. Skull Helmet
A showy and macabre piece of headgear indeed! It takes one with a lot of confidence to pull this off, because if you back down while wearing it, the feathers and shape of the skull can easily be more of a hindrance than help! However, master it, and it is a very effective defense tool, protecting one of your most vital organs and intimidating your foe as well.

10. Poisson Mittens
I'll tell you right now, if you wear these out to fight, it won't matter how tough you are because you will look ridiculous -- be warned; your opponent will laugh. However, you can easily use this to get the upper hand! These mittens do an amazing job of protecting you, acting almost like light, twin shields on each arm. They make close combat easier because you don't have a bulky shield weighing you down and taking up one hand; you can wield your weapon with both hands, or two weapons at once! It grants you an enormous advantage.

And those were ten of Mistica's best defense weapons! Remember to pair your weapon and your defense carefully, playing to your strengths and your enemy's weakness for the best advantage. Do it well, and you're well on your way to getting out of any fight intact...and maybe even winning.
