Behind the Mirror: Part 1
Written By Xeiana

His mother always said to beware the darkness. It wasn’t the Imps or the nightmare pals that darted along the shadows, it was how darkness seemed to have a strange, almost living presence. Sometimes he doubted if it was true, but his mother was one of the smartest Braenons he ever knew, so he never questioned it. Mulling over these thoughts, Kaida listened to the heavy raindrops as the storm raged outside, curled up on the couch. His mother should have been back by now, before the storm had hit. So where was she?

A dart of iridescent light shot out of the closet door, almost making him jump.

“Flicker!” he scolded gently, squinting his eyes as the Daydream Foxusha landed on the back of the couch as she regained her balance. Like Kaida barely being able to glide due to his fear of heights, she wasn’t too good at keeping her balance in the air as she flew. It was one thing that the two had in common, thus sneaking her in when his mother wasn’t looking. Mother wasn’t that fond of having pals in the house.

“Hey Flicker, think Mom will get home soon? I’m hungry.” As if on cue, his stomach rumbled. The young Braenon had forgotten to eat lunch after he went to visit the Ahbruis nearby and challenged him to a game of riddles and puzzle-solving. Sliding off the couch, he knew his mother wouldn’t mind if he ate something small before dinner.

A flash of lightning tore through the sky, and with a resounding boom, the power went out. Flicker let out a chirp of distress and dove into his fur. Kaida shivered, his antennae pulsing as they helped paint a picture around him. Without light to guide him with his less-than-stellar eyesight, the heat and vibrations helped him avoid stumbling over a chair. Kaida frowned, heading over to the fridge to get a bite to eat before there was a chance for the food to go bad.

Walking past the mirror that his mother had insisted on buying, another lightning bolt struck. Flicker, who had peeked her head out of his fur, let out a hiss. He peered at the mirror, only briefly remembering that Flicker hated them, always spooked by them. Maybe it was something about that little wives’ tale about mirrors and the losing of one’s soul that he read in a book.

A crack caught his ears, making him pause as his ears swiveled to catch where it came from. It was too low to be a lightning strike. Yet, there it was again, coming from the mirror. Turning away from the fridge, he doubled back, listening as the cracking that began to increase. Flicker hissed again, looking up as Kaida heard the mirror shatter.

“Ah!” Kaida flung his wings in front of him to shield himself from the falling glass. His mom was going to kill him since it was her favorite mirror, but what the heck had shattered it? Dread overcame the young Braenon, backing himself up into the corner, yet he could detect no heat sources. No one was there.

Old earthy air drifted into the house. Kaida almost was sent into a coughing fit. There was no way there could be dust there, his mother loved to clean… He took a tentative step forward, avoiding the shards. Where there had been a wall behind the mirror, it lay gaping like a mouth ready to devour whatever entered it. Sticking his nose over the bottom he chirped … Barely anything came back to him, the most logical reason being it was a tunnel. Hopping through the mirror and stumbling, it sent both him and Flicker to the ground hard.

“Ouch! Sorry Flicker.” He mumbled, wings aching from landing on them. Flicker leaped onto the top of his head, chittering away to him, clearly nervous. Kaida shared the sentiment. Here he was, in a passageway behind a broken mirror. No normal Braenon would go off into this without thinking. There were two tunnels before him, one directly in front, and the other off to the side.

It was something out of one of the horror stories his friends talked about. Two possible ways to continue. There was also the option of going back to await his mother’s return but… Left or right? Continue or go back?

I think Kaida should go down the straight tunnel! :) Looking forward to seeing how this story turns out.

I think we should go off to the side. What does anyone else think? It is a 'choose your own adventure' after all. Let's play!
