Character Spotlight: Cash Meri
Written By gemajgall
Many Misticans do business with Cash Meri on a daily basis, and yet so few actual know his name. Most simply see him as “The Banker—you know, that mericai who handles all the deposits.” He's worked in Mistica National Bank for so long that most simply see him as a part of the fixtures. However, like most Misticans, he too has a story to tell.
The MNB is an old establishment, built at the same time as the city's founding. Cash's grandfather developed it from the very beginning—from breaking ground to placing his name plaque on the desk. Although stuffy and serious, his professionalism developed a reputation in the community, causing a regular crowd to use the services he offered all the way until his death. The same was true of his son.
And now, Cash Meri carries the same integrity in his daily transactions.
When asked what was the most important part of the bank, Cash replied, “Security. Things have change a bit since Granddad's day. I don't think he'd ever imagine some of the underhooved dealings I see from time to time. And I mean more than Makoto. That's why I've worked on putting more security measures into place.”
Recent additions include a high-security vault and the option for Misticans to have multiple accounts “so they don't have to carry all their hatchis in one basket.” Handwriting samples are gathered and examined before a new account can be opened or closed, and Bank Bars allow Misticans to convert their Misticash into easier-to-carry bars. All paperwork is encrypted and filed using algorithms unique to MNB so no one could hack or manipulate the data.
“But it's always an evolving process,” Cash says. “Someone thinks of something dishonest, and [my staff and I] have to fix it.”
Cash has also said that prejudice is bad for business, so he offers everyone services equally. “Let me tell you, it does get tense when the imps and sprites are going to war but both want to make withdrawals at the same time. I do my best to keep the peace, but I'm not above calling Officer Coppa if more than words and deposit slips are being exchanged.”
The final part of his business model, Cash told the Chronicles, is the most important. “Service, service, service. I talk to my customers—I know their names, even if they don't know mine. I make sure my interest rates are reasonable. And I own up to any mistakes. That builds rapport, and rapport builds business. It's as simple as that. Granddad told me, Dad told me, and now I'm telling you.”
