Character Spotlight: Tatenda
Written By gemajgall

A dozen of young Misticpets looking for a home; a frazzled worker trying to take care of them. On occasion, some items may get dropped off; other times legendaries may come by to adopt. It sounds like the average day for Charitee at the pound. Right?

Except it's not.

In Jumboyo Village, Tatenda's days pass similarly to Charitee—but with less recognition, she finds herself doing the full workload by herself.

“It's a good thing I have an extra set of hands,” she jokes. “And they always seem to be full.”

Whenever parent Jumboya, Izabel and Panjin parents want their children to find homes beyond Jumboyo Village, they go to Tatenda. Many of the village children outright live with her until a caring home can be found. However, this can take a while. Since the citizens of Jumboyo Village want to ensure only the best adopters for their children, a rigorous screening means the process takes all the longer.

“And I'm the one who does the screening,” says Tatenda. “I know it's tedious, but even more—I know the people of the village entrust this to me—Hey! Don't swing on the lamp!”

The energetic primates have full run of her hut, and the expected chaos always ensues. Fortunately, the entire place has multiple safety measures to prevent serious injuries. Windows all have screens so that no one can fall out; cupboards are equipped with special locks. Any toy with a swallowable small part is prohibited. Even the foods served are monitored carefully for allergens.

In addition, the children regularly go outside. Tatenda has her own jungle gym that has been specially crafted for primates. She also plans occasional field trips around the village. This helps not only to teach them more about the communities they may encounter but also to introduce them to many different types of people, helping them overcome shyness.

“I'm always glad when one of the neighbors drops by to lend a hand or four,” Tatenda adds. “Even after a full day of running around and playing outside, arts and crafts time, and even a field trip, the little ones still want to go-go-go. I tell ya, blink a moment, and they start drawing on the walls!” She laughs light heartedly. “Don't get me wrong, they're perfect little angels. When they finally go to sleep.”
