Character Spotlight: Mistress Midnight & Prism White
Written By gemajgall
Rainbow Scout Pink looked around the battlefield; her friends were barely moving, and Rainbow Scout Orange's arm was bent at an unnatural angle—it had to be broken. Pink's knees threatened to buckle beneath her; she had no strength left. Standing on a pile of rubble, looking down at the fallen fighters, Mistress Midnight laughed darkly.
“Why?! Why are you doing this?!” Pink pleaded. “Scout Black! We're friends! We've—!”
“I am Mistress Midnight!” the fallen scout roared. Caaws circled around her as dark lightning flashed dramatically. She pointed a long, perfectly manicured black fingernail at Pink. “Where is your friendship now? Where is the loyalty and honesty and kindness you claim to fight for?” She practically spat out her adjectives. “Once a traitor, always a traitor!”
“No,” said a weak voice. Pink whirled around and saw Rainbow Scout Red slowly rising. “You're the one who betrayed us.”
“We never wanted to hurt you,” added Rainbow Scout Blue, coughing once or twice as she placed a hand at her injured side.
Mistress Midnight's eyes narrowed on them, reverberating with ice and cruelty. “After what happened last time, why should I believe your lies again?”
Pink grimaced, knowing the truth about that accusation. Fresh guilt washed over her, and it was all she could do to choke out, “I'm...I'm sorry.”
“Can we treat it like one big misunderstanding?” Rainbow Scout Orange asked with her broken arm hanging uselessly by her side. Her face shown with resolve; the pain was buried deeply. “Can't we just start over?” She held her uninjured arm out with her palm turned warmly upward. “Come on; let's laugh together again.”
“I...didn't like it before,” agreed Rainbow Scout Purple. “When I was all alone, that is. But now...now that I know what it's like to have true friends—I never want to give that up! I want to be together with everyone, even you, Black.”
“You fools!” Mistress Midnight bellowed with a sneer. A heavy dark aura surrounded her. “It's too late for that! The time of words has long passed! Now, feel all of my bitterness and contempt! My hatred will destroy you!”
Caaw feathers swirled around her, turning into dark magic that condensed into a point on her outstretched finger. The Rainbow Scouts had seen this attack before—like a laser, it had leveled an entire street in Klaeris City with ease. Scout Pink gripped her bow; she didn't know if she'd have enough strength left to defend against such an enormous attack again.
“Go ahead if that's what it takes,” Rainbow Scout Green's voice cut through. Slowly as a result of her bruises, she placed herself between Mistress Midnight and the other Rainbow Scouts so that Mistress Midnight's attack was pointed straight at her heart. “But this isn't what you want, is it? You're crying.” Her voice was filled with compassion.
“I am not crying!” Mistress Midnight raged as tears dripped down her chin. “Now go die! Dark Devastation!” The potent beam fired from her finger, ripping up the ground in its wake.
At that exact second, the tears she had shed sparkled off of the rock they had fallen on. Brilliant white light radiated from them, washing over the other Rainbow Scouts with warmth. In a blinding moment of dark energy versus bright light, everything vanished. Not a single building's outline could be seen. Even Mistress Midnight had to shield her eyes as bits of debris whipped around her.
As quickly as it started, it faded. Standing in the middle of where the Rainbow Scouts had been was now a single scout in a pure white uniform; her skirt was white, her bodice was white, even her gloves were white. The only bit of color she had were the rainbow highlights in her flowing white hair. In her hand was a platinum ceremonial sword with an orb pulsating in the hilt.
“Save me!” the nearly forgotten voice of Rainbow Scout Black's voice echoed in her ears from deep within Mistress Midnight.
“Who...who are you?!” demanded Mistress Midnight, taking a step backward.
“We are Rainbow Scout Prism White,” said the white scout in unison. The voice of every single rainbow scout resounded as she spoke. “We have heard your heart. And this time, we promise you, we will save you!” With that, she raised her sword, causing the nearby shadows to flicker.
“Save yourself!” spat Mistress Midnight, once again gathering dark energy. “Dark Devastation!”
A pair of white wings popped out of Prism White's back as she lightly leaped into the air, bringing her sword down as she did. A sharp beam of energy whipped off of the razor edge directed right at Mistress Midnight. “Angelic Heart's Healing!”
With ease, the slice of white shredded the beam of darkness before continuing onward and striking Mistress Midnight across the chest. The caaws that surrounded her burst into diamond dust that scattered along the winds as Mistress Midnight screamed in pain; dark energy fled her body in the form of twisted shadows.
The healing wave continued, and the broken pieces of Klaeris City vanished, making it whole as it once was. The storm clouds lifted, and gentle light filtered down as a quiet calm settled over the whole scene.
Prism White walked over to the fallen form of Mistress Midnight. But her dark dress and mature demeanor were done. Instead now she looked just as she did before—a teenage girl wearing the uniform of Rainbow Scout Black. Prism White gently scooped her up and walked away towards the setting sun.
