Character Spotlight: Terriza
Written By gemajgall
The sands of the Scarab Desert hold many mysteries. Caravans have been lost in sandstorms, Misticpals crawl amidst the rocks, Anyai carry out religious rituals, rare minerals can be found, and some even say entire cities have been lost. It's from these very sands that Terriza originated.
It was a long night of darkness; no one dared leave Ravi-Sorin, for a strange wind blew across the desert that night. Sandstorms brewed, shutting down the city's trade for nearly a week. Dunes shifted, exposing a long-lost tunnel. Like a scratch across the face of Mistica, the cavern was unveiled—rocky tooth-like edges covered the entrance while foul smelling air wafted out. Not an ounce of light penetrated the shifting shadows inside.
The Sand Crabs evacuated the area; not even Desert Flies would get close—they could sense the forgotten creature that had been hidden in the darkness of the planet. And it was darkness the creature thrived in, for once the heat of the sun vanished and all three of Mistica's moons shone in full, Terriza crept up from the depths of its prison.
Its eyes had been reduced to mere sockets, so it sniffed the air, searching for fresh blood. Terriza's long claws scraped along the sands; its tail swished back and forth for balance. A Dillow got close, unaware. With one single motion, Terriza pierced through the smaller Misticpal's thick armor and tore into its flesh with its long teeth.
That was first of Terriza's victims as it began its nighttime raids against Ravi-Sorin.
In less than a month, the citizens of Ravi-Sorin feared going out at night. Rumors circulated about the vicious creature with many razor-sharp teeth and long, thick claws. Mothers watched their children closely while the Anyai priests secluded themselves in Rae's shrine, praying for deliverance. They knew Terriza moved in darkness—their hope was that the goddess of light would have power over it.
But the answer they received was not the answer they expected. The next morning, on Rae's altar, was a brilliant sword that seemed to shine with its own inner light. The goddess had not delivered them from Terriza—she had given them the means to fight back.
They gave the sword to one of the strongest Comeils in Ravi-Sorin. Then, together with Comeil and Yehxil warriors and Anyai priests, they met Terriza on the outskirts of town at dusk. The battle was fierce. Terriza struck again and again—most of the Misticpets' weapons bounced off of his thick hide. Only the sword Rae provided sliced through him.
As the sun began to paint the morning sky, only Terriza and the Comeil warrior remained standing. Using all his strength, the warrior channeled the light of the sunrise into the sword, forcing Terriza to his knees. But the warrior did not relent there. He pressed his advantage, driving Terriza farther and farther back until he was trapped within the heart of the Battle Portal.
At that moment, the priests sealed him inside. And Terriza has been imprisoned there ever since, awaiting opponents who dare challenge it, looking for revenge for its imprisonment and blood to feed its hunger...
