To Gift, or not to Gift
Written By RuthieRox
Now, please don't confuse this with the gifting, giveaway, participation, celebration, birthday type boards.
This is about, larger, gifting, to help people meet large goals.
Like, seeing someone post a "Buying" board for something large, and Then, gifting it. PBs, Token (Vending Machine) items,
PNT, UNT, etc etc.
Here is my statement, and then, my question .....
I know it's is fun, it's nice, it gives those gifting a great feeling. It makes those receiving feel noticed, cared for and lets
them know they are valued in the community.
But, at the same time, does it damage the community and site in a way? Does it fulfill members goals too fast, leaving them feel there is nothing to do, nothing now to work for, ... now ... what?
Does it also make those who aren't gifted feel, less valued, like they don't somehow fit in?
Does it bring in less income for site growth, from those who maybe WERE leaning towards donations to get those items
themselves?
With all the boards about community fails, and "cliques" and ... what is there to do .. this has come to mind.
Is this something that we have, in a way, created ourselves?
Even site structure. Many complain about credit shop items, pricing, etc. But, we are the only site community that offers converter, weekly credit giveaways (via participation and winning) and place large Credit items in freebies places such as Ruins. We also periodically hide them (PBs, PSCs, PNTs) in places like Ill Gains. sure, they have to be paid for, and at a higher mc rate than converter. but, they are there, available without needing site credits.
These things are not being listed as, ... praise the site, staff, they do soooo much. They are listed more as, here is what we do offer, and looking at it, is it still really as hard/unfair/unavailable as some make
it seem or feel?
Do we, ourselves (gifting members) along with all the current avilabilities and offers, make it too easy to get these items,
making goals too easily filled?
Some of these boards speak of "greed" being a site issue, but could the larger issue be .. the damages of generosity?
I am unsure, and wonder, now looking from another angle, how others may see this. Be honest, be relaistic and look back. If some of us had to work a bit more, ourselves, to meet those goals ..without help, would we value them more. would the site then seem a little more, like a site with something to work for?
